A Grade eight student at Chelmsford Public School, Spencer Burton has been around sports for as long as he can remember. Of course, with a pair of sports-minded older brothers in Tyler (age 19) and Sheldon (age 16), this probably seems only fitting.

In fact, despite the age difference, it wasn’t the least bit unusual to have the Burtons suiting up together. “Soccer was my sport growing up”, notes Spencer Burton. “I played with my brothers’ team…I think it made me try harder just to keep up with everyone.”

Likewise, the youngest Burton was often just a tag-along at track practice for the other two, allowing Spencer to simply practice alongside older athletes. The regime seemed to work out as the 15 year old Burton captured Gold in all three events he entered during the Gibson Memorial Track & Field competitions earlier this year.

“I practice a few times a week and I want to concentrate on the 100m dash – I should be able to run 11.90 seconds or so” said Burton. Perhaps it is the range of sports at which the talented Rayside teen excels that helps set him apart. In garnering three gold at the track, Burton completed the rare trifecta of winning a sprint event (100m dash), jump event (long jump) and throw competition (shot put).

In fact, a year ago he added wrestling to his athletic resume, a sport in which Sheldon already excels. “I joined originally because my brothers joined” said Spencer Burton. And keeping up with his brothers has served the youngest of three Burtons very well to date.
