With the hustle and bustle of the 2019 Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame Dinner now out of the way, organizers have another pressing matter to attend to.
Sadly, just two weeks prior to the annual summer tradition, former Sudbury Star sports reporter and sports editor Norm Mayer succumbed to a heart attack, a week or so after having been admitted to hospital with serious heart ailments.
Listed as the Sports Hall of Fame "historian", Mayer would put his love of local sports to good use over the course of the past few decades, compiling much of the information on local athletes, coaches and other sports personalities, both current and retired, that would be shared with the crowd at the well-attended dinner.
In his memory, the group will be hosting the "End of an Era: An Evening for Norm Mayer" at the Caruso Club (lower hall) on Wednesday, July 10th, from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.
There is no cost to attend the event, though Chris Sheridan and the Hall of Fame committee will be accepting donations to be put towards some sort of memorial to a man who lived and breathed local sports.
A graduate of the Cambrian College journalism program, Mayer enjoyed covering the less publicized sports and athletes in the area at least as much as he did in sharing the stories of the most accomplished Sudburians of his era.
