Lots of shots, not so many goals in pre-season opener
2018-09-01

A pair of third period goals and an outstanding performance from 18 year-old goaltender Cédrick Andrée was enough to propel the visiting Ottawa 67's to a 3-1 win over the Sudbury Wolves on the opening night of OHL exhibition play.

The fast-paced affair, which included a total of 63 shots on net, 39 by the Wolves, also featured no less than 22 minor penalties assessed, along with a major for cross-checking and game misconduct to Sudbury overage forward Drake Pilon.

Ottawa broke the ice with the man advantage late in the opening frame, when a puck squirted loose, off a scramble in the Sudbury zone, with Quinn Yule staring at an open net off to the side of Finnish goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.

The Wolves pulled even at 6:07 of the second period on a power play of their own, this one of the 5 on 3 variety, as Macauley Carson completed a three-way passing play from Blake Murray and David Levin, burying the only puck that would elude Andrée on this night.

The game-winning marker would see Ottawa veteran Austen Keating circling behind the Sudbury net before feeding a nifty backhand pass to defenceman Carter Robertson, who ripped a shot from the slot past Jake McGrath, as the local puck-stoppers split the duties in the Friday evening encounter.

Deflating though this goal might have been, it was an insurance marker from fellow blueliner Merrick Rippon that really sealed the fate of coach Cory Stillman and company. Carrying the puck through the neutral zone, Rippon wristed a shot from above the top of the circle that eluded the trapper of McGrath, surely a shot that the Mississauga native would love to have back.

While the majority of the returning Sudbury talent were suited up for this contest, the festivities did provide actual OHL competition for the likes of Drew Wawrow, Isaak Phillips, Blake Robinson, Jack Thompson, Luukonen and, of course, first overall pick Quinton Byfield for the first time, none of whom looked particularly out of place against an Ottawa team that is expected to contend for an Eastern Conference championship this year.

The Wolves are back in action Sunday evening, on the road, meeting the Owen Sound Attack on the shores of Georgian Bay, completing their trek away from home Tuesday against the Barrie Colts. The team is then off for an eight day stretch before hosting the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds on Thursday, September 13th at 7:05 p.m.
