Silver medals and rivalry win enough for St Denis
2018-05-05

A silver medal performance in the girls division "A" final of the 40th Franco Basketball Tournament might not have been exactly what the St Denis Tigres had in mind.

Along with a huge semi-final win over their arch-rivals, the Macdonald-Cartier Panthères, however, the combination would easily make this tournament a success for coaches Christine Dénommé, Brielle Bisaillon and company.

The class of the bracket turned out to be the Ange-Gabrielle Anguilles from Brockville, the visitors posting an impressive 34-13 win over St Denis in the final Thursday at Laurentian University.

The Anguilles featured an impressive attack, with Chloe Lapointe (13 pts), Nyah Robichaud (11) and Aislin Davey (9) all contributing regularly. Mia Zandbergen rounded out the scoring from the free throw line, with the Ange-Gabrielle roster also including Mia Moran, Anysha Andress, Misha Ballerscheff, Lexie Joli-Coeur, Anella Roney, Talia Grayham, Violette Neelin, Emma Dingman, Emma Neelin and Paige Gilbert.

Countering for St Denis, in the scoring department, were Alyzé Bisaillon (6), Noelle Tiangco (3), Kami Dreger (2) and Gabby Tiangco (2). The remainder of the Tigres lineup featured Arijana Tuttle, Sophie Démoré, Claudine Tubin, Mikel Dreger, Andrée Thibeault, Sarah Lanthier, Ella Minor, Anna Shaver and Bianca Vigna.

The boys "A" final in the tournament that included nearly 40 teams from across the province went right down to the wire as St Charles Garnier from Whitby edged Georges-P-Vanier from Hamilton by just a single point.

The Hanmer Sabres boys team did manage to earn bragging rights in the division "B" grouping, edging Macdonald-Cartier 37-33. Suiting up for the Sabres were Scott Rienguette, Noah Beaulne, Ashten Lachance, Ian Aubin, Zachary Houle, Félix Gervais, Mathieu Champagne, Jacob Hogue, Nathan Cotnoir, Ashton Giroux, Martin Boisvert and Dérek Lecuyer, with coaches Denis Lessard and Anne Blanchette patrolling the sidelines.
