Silver lining for Valley East ringette teams at provincials
2005-03-22

Although they travelled different routes in arriving at their respective Provincial A championship games, the results were the same for both Valley East entries. The Valley East Tweens and Juniors each walked away as silver medallists, with the Tweens falling 4-3 to Chatham and the Juniors being on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision to Whitby.

Tweens

After opening with a pair of wins on day one, the Valley East Tweens went on to reel off four more victories, finishing atop their division with an unblemished 6-0 record. The Tweens edged Guelph 2-1, doubled West Ottawa 8-4, squeaked past Elora-Fergus 5-4 and stopped Pickering 7-2.

The team then awaited the semi-final, as Chatham nipped Guelph 3-2 to advance and face the Valley. In the gold medal encounter, Kari Rafuse, Renee Delarosbil and Mera Bartsch-Dicaire scored for Valley East as they fell just one goal short. Delarosbil and Rafuse led the Tweens scoring over the four-day event with 12 and 11 goals respectively.

Juniors

After splitting a pair of games in day one competition, the Valley Juniors started day two off with a convincing 6-0 win over Cambridge as Danyka Gagnon powered the offense with a hat-trick. Meghan West, Brooke Hope and Carly Fraser tallied single markers. The afternoon game proved a much tougher test as Brooke Hope opened the scoring for Valley East only to see Whitby rally with a pair of goals in a 2-1 loss for the locals.

Needing a strong performance Saturday in order to ensure nabbing one of the three playoff berths, the Juniors came up with their guns blazing, scoring an 8-2 win over Mitchell and 5-1 victory against Gloucester-Cumberland. Once again, Gagnon, West and Hope were at the forefront of the attack, netting four, three and two goals respectively.

The Valley's 4-2 record guaranteed the team third place and a rematch with Upper Ottawa-Valley, who had beaten Valley East 6-5 on Thursday. Despite the teams providing a fast-moving pace to the game highlighted by strong skating on both sides, goals remained at a premium. Thankfully for the Valley girls, a pair of goals from Meghan West and a single tally from Kirsti Manuel were enough to lift the Juniors into the final with a 3-2 win.

The championship battle pitted Valley East's aggressive offensive style with the defensive juggernaut that is the Whitby squad. And as often happens come playoff time, defense wins out with Whitby posting a 3-1 victory in claiming gold. Danyka Gagnon managed to hit paydirt for the Valley.

The remaining members of the Valley East Juniors silver medal winning team are: Chelsie Moore, Angele Lachance, Jena Kiviaho, Caitlin McAuliffe, Abbie Scott, Allie Peacock and goaltenders Jillian Schell and Cristale Trottier. The local ringette season will close with the Regional "B" championships set for April 1st-3rd at arenas in Walden, Garson and Valley East.
