SDSC merge interest in futsal and Food Bank

A couple of very worthwhile ventures for the folks involved with the Sudbury District Soccer Club (SDSC) over the course of the past few days. The SDSC hosted, over the weekend, their second annual Futsal Tournament, with all teams encouraged to bring along donations for the Sudbury Food Bank as the club looks to partner their athletic endeavours with community involvement.

“The Sudbury Food Bank is near and dear to my heart,” noted Rodney Kasunich, a key organizer with “Team Big Rod”, one of the primary contributors to a very successful collection of more than 300 pounds of food that were added to the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive.

“It’s one of the most powerful ways that you can give back to your community, by helping out people who are obviously less fortunate than yourself. Getting everyone to donate and chip in was not a stretch at all.”

That was music to the ears of tournament director Jim Cress. “Being an employee at Vale, I had been aware and contributed to the Edgar Burton Fund for many years on a personal level,” he said. “But I had a real fear that we have ten cans in total.”

In fact, some 310 food items of all different kinds were collected. “Some teams really banded together, bringing out entire cases of items.” No sooner were those numbers in the books when the U17 SDSC Celtics CSL team were busy making a $1340 cheque presentation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Looking to support Anne Lagadin, mother of long-time club soccer talent Ben Lagadin, in her on-going battle with cancer, the SDSC lads ran a “Crush Cancer” campaign during the summer of 2016, selling t-shirts both on a local level, but also to members of the southern Ontario teams against whom they competed this summer.
