The little guys take over Valley East arenas
2017-02-07

A delegation of teams some 56 strong, including visitors from Orillia, Sault Ste Marie, Temiskaming Shores, Timmins and Manitoulin Island, kept the arenas in Valley East hopping last weekend, as the Valley East Minor Hockey Association hosted their annual Tyke/Novice/Atom Tournament.

The tiering of teams, mid-tournament, allows for a sizeable number of championship finals, with divisions created to honour the memories of Steven Philippe, Don Logan and Barry Nauss.

Novice action would see Kelly's Parkway Service defeat the Soo Elks 4-1 in an all Sault Ste Marie final, as River Sayers scored twice to lead the winners. Kale McLean and Jaiden Lesage also joined their teammate on the scoresheet, while Harper Coulton countered for the Elks.

Logan Remeikis was a one-man wrecking crew for Copper Cliff - Toronto, as the novices edged the Wikwemikong Hawks 6-5. Jack Mahaffy and Anthony Tripodi rounded out the scoring for the winners, with Evan Morrison registering a hat trick for Wiky, and Treyton Manitowabi and Noah Jackson chipping in with one goal each.

The Brady Storage Bulldawgs trimmed Dominion Construction 5-3 in a Novice "A" final, as Logan Massicotte (2), Carter Rideout, Logan Bodson and Nicolas Leduc all hit the mark for the Dawgs.

Brandon Hébert answered with a two-goal effort for Dominion, with Luc Beaulieu adding a solo tally. The Gore Bay Bruins received an overtime goal from Greyson Orford, slipping past Copper Cliff - Boston 4-3.

Kyle Nodecker scored twice for the winners, with Jackson Chevrette capping things off, while the Copper Cliff squad balanced their offense between Ezio Cusinato, Johnathan Tripodi and Adam Haslam.

Braedan Beggs found the back of the net on two occasions, including in the three on three OT session, lifting Cousin Vinny's to a 2-1 win over State Group in one of four atom gold medal games. Meeka Duguay managed to break the shutout for State Group.

In the remaining finals, Gore Bay doubled the Oro Thunder 6-3, Temiskaming Shores blanked Rayside-Balfour 5-0, and the North Channel Atoms downed the Soo Atomic Red McFlurries 5-2.

Junior Tyke play featured some players with a sniper's touch, as Kawnayah Osawamick drilled home four goals and Yanic Boisvert netted a pair, propelling the Valley East Metro Dragons to a 6-2 triumph over Cousin Vinny's (Noah Therrien, Tessa Van Drunen).

Snap Fitness rolled over Tim Horton's in the remaining Junior Tyke affair, while the Senior Tyke "B" final kept fans on hand glued to their seats. More than eight minutes of three on three hockey was needed to decide matters, as the Rayside-Balfour Wildcats edged Tim Horton's 2-1.

Jordan Boyer and Adrian Cecchetto took care of the scoring for the 'Cats, with Alex Proulx celebrating a single marker for the "Roll Up The Rim" crew.

Two-goal performances were in style in the Senior Tyke "A" affair, as Nicholas Christakos, Liam Roberts and Gregory Patrie all turned the trick in a 6-3 Cousin Vinny's victory over the Nickel Centre Jets (Clark Kulyski, William Knight, Hudson Lapierre).
