Nickel Centre midgets keep hometown fans Rockin
2016-02-01

The Nickel Centre Midget Rocks ensured that the hometown crowd would head home happy.

Playing in the closing encounter of the 2016 NCMHA (Nickel Centre Minor Hockey Association) Winterblast, the Rocks scored three unanswered third period goals, erasing a 1-0 deficit and defeating the Val D'Or Marines Gouinz 3-1 in the midget final.

Eric Roussel scored twice for the NCMHA crew, with a solo tally from Jarret Serré as the Rocks benefitted nicely from the mid-season acquisition of long-time "AAA" players Tanner Webkamigad and Gregory Trudeau-Paquet, both members of the SDSSAA front-running St Charles College Cardinals as well.

Nathan Boudreau replied in a losing cause for Val D'Or. In an all-Sudbury Bantam final, Shelby Saucier scored a pair of goals over the final 5:19, lifting the Sudbury OPP Strike Force past the Sudbury 80's Red Wings 3-1.

Lucas Mrozewski adding the remaining goal for Strike Force, with Mitchell Keyes countering for the Red Wings. The Peewee encounter was not nearly as close as Lipi Rouyn-Noranda blanked the Sudbury Lakers 6-0, powered by a two-goal effort from Gabriel Grenier.

Zachary Lacombe, Izack Levesque, Julien St Louis and David Fortier rounded out the scoring for the Quebec side. Tanner Rollins and André Boulet scored two goals apiece, leading the Coniston Flames to the Atom championship hardware, besting Elliot Lake Foodland 4-1.

Coleson Whatkinson netted the only goal for Elliot Lake. Brendan Cooke was the story of the Novice Division, finding the back of the net no less than seven times in the championship encounter as the Thessalon Eagles ran roughshod over Jon's Medicine Shoppe from Sault Ste Marie.

The host association was front and center for the tykes final, as the Nickel Centre Ice Dogs downed the Nickel Centre Jets 5-2. Adrien Potvin scored twice for the winners, with solo markers coming courtesy of Keiran McCoy, Jack Deshaw and Charlie Matsos, while Kyle Buckland took care of all of the scoring for the Jets, drilling home a pair of goals.

Some fifty teams took part in the annual tournament hosted at the Garson Arena, Coniston "Toe Blake" Arena, and Cambrian Arena.
