Success in September for Sudbury soccer squads
2015-09-25

The "Sudbury Soccer Snapshot" is a weekly feature that is being presented courtesy of Martin Martic Dentistry. Each and every week, from May 1st through until the end of September, a weekly newsletter will be produced, covering off much of what is on the go in the world of competitive soccer locally.

As well, a recreational soccer "game of the week" will be highlighted, rotating between the various houseleagues that exist in and around Greater Sudbury. In the off-season, the newsletter will scale back to a bi-weekly feature, focusing heavily on the hundreds of young soccer players who shift to the indoor game as the fields become snow-covered for the winter.

The GSSC (Greater Sudbury Soccer Club) U13 Impact Girls closed out their season on a winning note, posting a 2-0 shutout over Bracebridge earlier this month. Heidi Lamothe and Logan Waltenbury handled the scoring for the Sudbury crew, while Cierra St Germain recorded the shutout.

The U13 Impact finished the season with a record of 5-7-2, competing in the Huronia District Soccer League, but displayed notable improvement over the course of the summer, remaining unbeaten in their final four games of the year (two ties and two wins).

Katie Chomiak finished fourth in league scoring with eight goals for the Impact, while Gianni Grossi (3), Allison Weiler (2) and Kennedy Ward (2) were next in line.

Meanwhile, the GSSC U13 Impact Boys fared even better, securing second place in HDSL and with it, a promotion to the Central Soccer League next summer. With second place already locked up for the local crew, both Barrie and Bradford opted to forego a mid-September trip to Sudbury, forfeiting the final two games of the year.

The net result was a final record of 7-6-3 for the GSSC lads, bringing together this particular collection of talent for the very first time under new club head coach Aziz Almuwallad.

"This was the first time for these boys to play as a competitive team, and it was a good summer for them," noted Almuwallad, adding his sincere thanks to each and every parent for their on-going support of their sons.

"Now we need to learn from this year, to improve our work even more," he added. "We are are representatives of Sudbury now in a higher league. I am very proud of them, but there are many things we need to work on."

The SDSC (Sudbury District Soccer Club) U16 Celtic lads got an early taste of life in the CSL, facing teams of the caliber they are about to do battle with in 2016. The Celtic earned their promotion with a first place finish in the HDSL, outdistancing Collingwood by 13 points.

Competing at the Richmond Hill Showcase, coach Peter Trainor's squad opened with a scoreless draw against Glen Shields FC, with Sudbury goaltender Kiel Cress absolutely outstanding in posting the shutout.

Facing the host team in game two, the northern crew fell victim to a few questionable calls, dropping a 2-1 decision. Ben Lagadin netted the only Celtic goal, while Filippo Mazza was solid between the posts.

Battling Aurora in the third and final game, the Celtic closed off with a 1-0 win, a very solid effort against a side that finished in third place in their CSL division this summer.

Dante Corsi drilled the game-winning goal, as the team fell just short of qualifying for semi-final action. "It was a good experience, and just a preview for next year of what we come against in the CSL," stated Trainor.
