The SYBA (Sudbury Youth Basketball Association) U12 Atom Selects are off and running.
Competing in their first tournament action of the season, the Selects looked dominant in winning four straight games at the 11th Annual Orillia Lakers Basketball Tournament, beating the opposition by an average of 27 points.
The gold medal weekend kicked off in style as the Sudbury youngsters built up a 29-12 half-time lead over the PMBA Magic (Penetang-Midland), cruising to a convincing 59-26 victory.
Twins Liam and Brennan Lapierre paced the attack for the northern boys, netting 18 and 12 points respectively, with Eric Senechal hooping another seven and Abraham Soumahoro showing the way defensively.
Sudbury kept the ball rolling in game two, bouncing the Collingwood Trailblazers 59-32 as Soumahoro shone bright on the offensive end of the court, finishing with 16 points.
Liam Lapierre (14), Eric Huneault (7) and Sam Cloutier (6) also made their presence felt on the attack, with Lapierre also providing substantial ball pressure and hustle in his team's own half.
Battling Huntsville in the semi-final encounter, the Selects were not about to slow things down, bolting to a 36-10 lead with only two quarters in the books. By the time the dust settled, Sudbury had advanced to the championship game with a 61-36 win as Liam Lapierre led all scorers with 23 points.
With their eye on the prize, the Selects were back against the Trailblazers, with Collingwood not faring a whole lot better the second time around.
The Lapierre siblings were in fine form (Liam-18; Brennan-11), while Senechal and Jordan Maguire provided the defensive energy that set the stage for many of the Sudbury baskets.
The 2013 edition of the SYBA U12 Selects includes Sam Louste-Fillion, Brennan Lapierre, Miguel Poulin, Liam Lapierre, Caleb Lamontagne, Eric Huneault, Julien Berthiaume, Sam Cloutier, Eric Senechal, Jordan Maguire, Abraham Soumahoro and coaches Kyle Beers and Megan Chute.
