Ringette wrap-up at Countryside Complex

Valérie Ménard scored just over a minute into overtime, lifting the Valley East U19 girls past the Iroquois Falls X-Stream 4-3 as three days of ringette action wrapped up on Sunday at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

Karine Caron netted a pair of goals earlier in the game for the winners, with Murphy Stewart adding the remaining tally while Stephanie Giguere, Jessica Lisiecki and Stacey Festarini replied for the X-Stream.

The U19 division was one of two finals that came right down to the wire, with the U14 affair also decided by the thinnest of margins. Kyla Bruni and Allison McLean scored in the final 10 minutes, allowing Sudbury to escape with a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Timmins.

Zandrea Danis, Danika Danis and Taylor Gilchrist also scored for the host association, with Kelly-Anne Bennett (2), Jayden Lavictoire and Tierra Janveau replying in a losing cause.

The U10 tandem of Sarah Neelands and Zoe Landry proved to be the difference as Valley East outscored Sudbury 5-1 in the championship final. Neelands paced the Valley attack with a hat-trick, with Landry adding a pair, while Alexis McMurray, who enjoyed a six-goal outburst earlier in the weekend, accounted for the only Sudbury marker.

Kaitlyn Chevrier was the offensive catalyst in the U12 final, scoring five times to lead the Sudbury Petites to an 8-4 win over Walden. The remaining Sudbury goals came courtesy of Kristy St Amour, Amanda Tochokle and Mackenzie Tompkins.

Avery Blanchard countered with a pair of goals for Walden, with Erika Poirier and Hannah Niemi adding one goal each. Finally, in the only championship encounter not featuring at least one local representative, the Sault Ste Marie Icehawks doubled Sunderland 8-4 to secure the U16 crown.

A very balanced attack would see seven different players account for the Icehawks offense, with Avery See (2), Krista Maeumbaed, Katelyn Desgagne, Emily Giovagnoli, Caitlyn Rogozynski, Emilya Junor and Kaylin Paquette all joining in the fun.

Gabi Warren and Alexi Novis countered with two goals apiece for Sunderland as a total of 24 teams gathered in the city's south end for the ringette event which has recently been shifted from a bi-annual to an annual competition.
