Despite sitting just two points back of the Guelph Platers for first place in the Emms Division, Sudbury Wolves coach/GM Wayne Maxner continues to shake things up.
Maxner shipped local fan favourite Jamie Nadjiwan along with Neil Jones, Pat Malone and Dean Guitard of the Sudbury Cubs to the Cornwall Royals in exchange for two draft picks in the 1986 priority draft.
Two days after the deal, the local juniors showed no ill effects, dumping northern rivals North Bay Centennials 5-3. Ken McRae, Robin Rubic, Glenn Greenough, Mario Chitaroni and Max Middendorf scored once each for the homeside, while Rob DeGagne, Len Soccio and Dave McIlwain replied in a losing cause for coach Bert Templeton and company.
**********The 7th annual Mid North Motors Bonspiel is history and for a second straight year, a team from Sault Ste Marie walked away with top honours.
Mark Maki defeated Ron Diguer from Ottawa 7-1 in the championship final, taking home the $ 1300 first place prize money in the process.
Rounding out the qualifiers in the Mid North Motors Division were Cliff Winn (Onaping Falls) and Ken Silver (Elliot Lake), while Bob Coulter (Copper Cliff) defeated Bob Ash (Idylwdyle) to win the consolation side of the draw.
The Cavalier Pepsi Division provided an all-Coniston final as Dennis Slobodian upended the Paul Sauve foursome, with Lloyd Duhaime (Coniston) claiming the second event with a win over Larry Wagner (Onaping) and Henry Dykalski (Sudbury) stopping Gerry Maloney in the third event.
**********A meeting of the top two clubs in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association Jr "A" League provided no bragging rights as the Sudbury Cubs and Onaping Falls Huskies played to a 7-7 tie Wednesday night at the Carmichael Arena.
Playing his first game in a Cubs' uniform, former Henry Carr High School standout Jason Teale paced the Sudbury attack with a hat-trick, with Mark Turner adding a pair of goals.
Singles came from Peter Hellstrom and Kevin Fox, while Kevin Lee (2), Pierre Dupuis, Andy Cluett, Victor Colantonio, Ian Symington and Sean Kelly replied for the visitors.
"This is what first place is all about," exclaimed Sudbury coach Rod McNair after the game. "We take control at first, they bounce back and in the end, nobody wins."
**********A solid first half performance did not translate into victory for the Cambrian Golden Shield men's basketball team as Sir Sanford Fleming Knights overcame an 11-point deficit, earning a 72-66 victory on the road.
Roberto Parisotto led the way for Cambrian, netting a game high 27 points, with Todd Gribbon adding 20 and John Tymchuk another 13.
"I have to commend John (Mulligan) on his team's play, especially in the second half," said Cambrian coach Mike Mulvihill.
"They played a spirited and true game. Despite being down for the most part, they stuck in and their momentum eventually beat us."
**********The Lockerby Vikings captured their second straight overall title at the 45th annual SDSSA swim championships at the Laurentian University pool.
The Vikings beat out the combined Marymount-St Charles College team, with six individuals recognized as top swimmers in their respective categories:
Senior: Amber Clouthier (Lasalle); Jonathan Martin (Lockerby)Junior: Janet McKetsy (Lasalle); Jamie Bretzlaff (Lockerby)
Midget: Jennifer Stevenson (Lasalle); Steven Sloan (St Charles)
Serving as Master of Ceremonies, swimming great Alex Baumann also remained on hand to present the medals at the conclusion of the single-day meet that drew 320 competitors.
**********Alana Larocque, Brenda Frey and Lucio Fabris were double winners as the Sudbury YMCA Invitational Badminton Tournament was held at Cambrian College.
Larocque bounced Frey in the Ladies final, before the pair combined to capture Ladies Doubles, besting Wendy Champagne and Alice Davis from North Bay.
Fabris defeated Mark Tremblay in Men's Singes play and teamed with Bob Pilon in Doubles, knocking off Scott Innis and Pete Tiller.
Frey recovered from her singles' loss, joining forces with Innis and stopping Larocque and Tremblay in Mixed Doubles play.
**********Coming off OCAA coach of the year honours in 1984, rookie Laurentian Voyageurs volleyball coach Stan Salewski is hoping to carry his formula of success over to the crosstown post-secondary institution.
It won't be easy. With victories over Queen's and RMC (Royal Military College), Laurentian faces a much tougher test at home this weekend, battling the defending OUAA champion University of Toronto Blues.
"What we know of Toronto is that it's as strong as last season," said Salewski. "But everybody is confident and our expectation is that we will win on Saturday. We know we have our work cut out for us."
Carl Hutt is expected to provide a strong presence at power, with David Buckle returning as one of the premier setters in Ontario, according to Salewski.
Middles Dave Hatherall and Chuck McNeil are joined by rookies Terry Lanigan (power) and weak side player Don Lawrie.
