For the second straight weekend, the Laurentian Lady Vees basketball team have earned a split of weekend action.

Considering every player except for one is in either her freshman or sophomore year, and that the team lost their first three games by a combined total of 99 points, the limited success provides at least some signs of encouragement.

The Lady Vees rallied for a 57-51 victory, on the road, over the Waterloo Warriors, outscoring the homeside 17-8 over the final ten minutes of play to post the come-from-behind win.

Lockerby Composite graduate Erin Simpson, in just her second year at Laurentian, continues to show signs of development, leading the way with 24 points, including an impressive 5/7 evening from beyond the three-point arc.

Simpson was the only L.U. player to reach double digits in the tough, defensive battle, with Emma Decloe and Amanda McDonald chipping in with nine points each.

"Any road win in our league is a good win, and I am very happy to get the victory," said head coach Mike Clarke. "They (Waterloo) are a tough team, they will win some games this year and really compete.”

The Lady Vees out-rebounded their opponents 44-35 on the strength of a very balanced effort on the boards, with rookie Devenae Bryce leading the way with eight rebounds, followed closely by Krysten Patrick and Mary Scott with six apiece.

“We need to learn how to win and that is what we did today,” continued coach Clarke, acknowledging the patience that will be required with his young squad.

Samantha McIntyre paced the Waterloo attack with a dozen points, while Theresa Jacobs added ten more for the Warriors.

On Friday night in Kitchener, the early season offensive woes continued for the Laurentian gals, handed a 57-33 defeat at the hands of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.

The high-scorer for L.U., Mary Scott, managed only nine points, with McDonald, a former member of the Laurier team, not far behind with six.

The Hawks troika of Doreen Bonsu, Christa Mancino and Elliot Lake native Felicia Mazzerolle almost managed to outscored Laurentian between the three of them, with each of the ladies recording 11 points on the night.

The weekend action leaves Laurentian with a record of 2-4, returning home to close out their pre-Christmas schedule next week by welcoming the Guelph Gryphons Friday night and the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday, with both games set for the Ben Avery Gymnasium.
