A pair of overtime games that featured more than 30 minutes of exciting three on three action highlighted an outstanding weekend of hockey at the inaugural Nickel City Goal Miners Tournament in Garson.
In fact, three of the four championship finals were decided by a single goal as teams from as far away as Cochrane, Wawa, Clarington, Timmins, Sault Ste Marie and Schumacher gathered for the three-day event.
The Peewee grouping was quite likely the tighest of them all, a trait that remained through to the Gold medal encounter as Dylan Goulet and Keegan Gillis-McAnulty scored in the second period, lifting the Nickel City Rebels past the Clarington Toros 2-1.
The Rebels and Toros played to a 3-3 draw in the tournament opener early Friday morning, setting the tone for the level of competition that would be seen in almost every game.
The Cochrane Power Blues proved to be the class of the Bantam Division, scoring four second period power play goals en route to a 5-0 win over the Nickel City Flyers in the championship final.
Joseph Biers paced the northern lads with a two goal effort, with Nathan Delguidice, Alister Ethier and Alexandre Brisson chipping in with one goal apiece. Kurtis David recorded the shutout for Cochrane.
Jordan Connors provided the heroics for the Nickel City Flyers Minor Midgets, completing his hat-trick less than two minutes into overtime as the locals edged Sault Ste Marie Stitchking 4-3.
Patrick Labelle rounded out the scoring for Nickel City while Andrew Vanderburg, Bobby Gonneville and Matt White answered for the Soo crew, which needed almost a full overtime period to eliminate the Sudbury Bantam "AA" Bulldogs 3-2 in the morning semi-final.
And after having their way through round robin play, winning three straight games and outscoring their opponents 17-2, the Schumacher Cubs were upset in the Midget final.
Nathan McLeod scored with 3:06 remaining, lifting the West Nipissing New Sturgeon Builders to a 2-1 win over the Cubs after dropping a 6-0 decision in preliminary round action to the same team on Friday.
Derick Levesque opened the scoring in the first period for Schumacher, with Justin Beauchamp pulling West Nipissing even at 1-1 with 5:11 remaining in the middle frame.
