Canadians gunning for second place
2011-07-27

There is but one weekend of play remaining for the Sudbury Canadians, but with second place on the line in their first year of OWSL (Ontario Women's Soccer League) Provincial competition, nothing will be taken for granted.

The Canadians completed a hectic stretch last weekend, playing five games in as many days, including a 4-2 loss to the Oakville Girls U-21 team in Ontario Cup semi-final action.

In league games, the locals picked up a key sweep over the St Anthony's Stars, exploding for wins of 7-3 and 7-2 against the Ottawa-based franchise.

Cloe Lacasse showcased her considerable talent to a new adversary, scoring five times to lead the way, with single markers coming courtesy of Karolyne Blain and Taylor Lyons in the opening game win.

The locals made it two for two against the Stars the next day as the one-two punch of Blain (four goals) and Lacasse (three goals) were providing plenty of offense for coach Frank Malvaso and company.

With reinforcements on the way for the weekend games, the Canadians dropped a 4-3 decision to the Oshawa Turul 92's as Serena San Cartier handled all of the scoring for Sudbury.

The ladies rebounded nicely on Sunday, upending Oshawa 4-1 as Lacasse scored twice, while Blain and San Cartier tallied once each. With two games remaining on their schedule, the Canadians find themselves well back of the first place Markham Lightning, undefeated with a mark of 10-0-3.

However, second place remains in sight as Sudbury (7-3-2) trails St Anthony's (8-5-0) by just a single point, with the northern crew holding one game in hand. That will be key as the Canadians play host to the last-place Unionville Milliken Red Strikers (2-8-2) for a pair of encounters this weekend.

Back to back wins would vault Sudbury into second place, as the girls then disperse in early August, most heading back to their respective post-secondary teams.

The Canadians and Red Strikers go toe to toe Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Delki Dozzi, battling again on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the same venue.
