U13 Girls have immediate Impact
2011-05-15

It sure didn't take much time for the new competitive soccer club in Sudbury to make an impact provincially. Competing in tournament play for the very first time in club history, the Greater Sudbury Impact U13 Girls captured the Oshawa Kicks Tournament earlier this month.

The Impact represent the merger of seven previous clubs which accomodated youth rep soccer in the Sudbury region in years gone by. The local ladies defeated Markam 2-1 in the championship final, earning the banner in the eight team Premier Division, an excellent gauge of the team's likely competitiveness in CGSL (Central Girls Soccer League) play this summer.

The U13 Impact crew opened with a 3-0 win over the Oshawa Kicks Rampage as Victoria Clark netted a pair of goals while Megan Smith chalked up the shutout.

Sudbury suffered their only loss of the weekend in game two, dropping a 4-0 decision to Markham, but bounced back nicely in blanking the Cumberland Cobras 2-0.

Mia Tullio and Chelsie Sargeant scored for the winners, with Josee Scott holding the Cobras at bay in net for Sudbury.

The result left Sudbury in a three-way tie with Markham and Cumberland for top spot in their pool, with a three team shootout needed to advance a pair of semi-finalist.

The Impact qualified as Scott turned aside four of the seven kicks she faced, while Chloe Coulombe drilled the goal that moved the locals into the playoff round.

Things remained tense through the morning semi-final as Sudbury and the North Toronto Nitros headed to double overtime before Sarah Cholewinsky settled matters.

The Impact downed the Nitros 1-0, with Scott racking up her second whitewash of the tournament. No overtime needed, but equally as dramatic in the final as Cholewinsky converted on a free kick with about three minutes remaining to lift Sudbury past Markham 2-1.

Tullio netted the initial Impact goal as the team prepares to open CGSL play later this month. The Greater Sudbury Impact U13 Girls roster includes Allison Byrnes, Ambrosia Cantin, Alyssa Charsley, Sarah Cholewinsky, Victoria Clark, Chloe Coulombe, Karly Hellstrom, Kianna Houben, Emma McDougall, Madison Pincivero, Chelsie Sargeant, Josee Scott, Megan Smith, Mia Tullio and Deanna Krueger.

The team is coached by Jon Hussak and Andy Charsley, while Jim Scott handles the role as team manager.
