On the very last day of their 2010-2011 season, the Sudbury Playground Hockey League (SPHL) crew certainly knew how to make the most of it. Four straight overtime games and a 22 player shootout were among the highlights as all eight divisional finals were hosted on Sunday.
The drama of back to back overtime encounters in the Peewee age grouping seemed to set the stage for the Bantam "B" final as the Algonquin Hawks and Cedar Park hooked up in a game that appeared destined to never end.
The tightly contested affair see-sawed from the opening faceoff, as Jesse Butler (Algonquin) and Cody Leduc (Cedar Park) traded first period goals. Cedar Park netminder Joel Aubin was the story of the story of the middle frame, stopping Jeffrey Luoma in tight and getting a little help from his goal post along the way.
Another great glove save by Aubin, this time on Marc Gagnon early in the third, before Cedar Park executed a two on one to near perfection. Alex Mayotte slipped the perfect pass across to Jean-Noel Desmarais, who tucked it into the empty-net, giving Cedar Park a 2-1 lead.
But this one was far from over as Don Ferguson ripped home the tying marker from the slot. Both teams enjoyed some great opportunities as overtime dwindled from four on four hockey all the way down to one on one, but goaltenders Aubin and Jens Langen stand tall, turning aside breakaway attempts from Gagnon and Mayotte.
Off to a shootout, where Keagan Basso converted on the second Cedar Park attempt, seemingly sealing the victory. That was until Brandon Fragomeni calmly knotted the game, once again, making no mistake on a do or die third shot for the Hawks.
The goalies then combined to make 15 consecutive saves in the shootout until Wesley Rice, the 11th shooter for Algonquin, parlayed a nifty deke into the game-winning goal as the Hawks edged Cedar Park 3-2.
Just hours earlier, the Peewee "A" final would rival the Bantams in excitement as countless lead changes marked the nail-biting affair. Goals from Jonathan Zanini, Nico Presot and Ben Cortolizzi for Algonquin had answered a hat-trick by Kurtis Brisebois (Riverdale) as the teams remained tied at three early in the third.
Brisebois provided his team with a definite lift, netting his fourth of the game with just 2:08 remaining, but Algonquin battled back yet again. A centering pass from Presot found Cortolizzi wide open to the side of the net and he made no mistake, sending the game to overtime with just 6.6 seconds showing on the clock.
A one minute four on four session solved nothing, but with the sides playing three on three hockey, Andrew Scott jammed home the rebound as the Hawks clipped Riverdale 5-4.
The Peewee "B" matchup would come down to the two on two session as Andrew Graham converted on the breakaway, propelling Cedar Park past the Lo-Ellen Lightning 3-2. Bailey Michaud and Drew Fauts added the remaining Cedar Park tallies, while William Tarini and Jacob Sutton, on a third period penalty shot, replied in a losing cause.
Not to be outdone, Lo-Ellen and Riverdale also went to overtime to decide matters in the Bantam "A" championship affair, as Nicholas Fitzgerald scored with the team playing three on three hockey, allowing Riverdale to claim their second trophy of the day.
Brock Sutton opened the scoring for Lo-Ellen, netting the only goal of the opening frame before Riverdale answered with markers from Justin Stapleton and Cory Levesque, giving the team a 2-1 lead late in the game.
But as had been the case all day long, the last of the finals would remind fans that "it ain't over until the final whistle". Zachary McMahon found' the back of the net with just 1:31 left to play, sending yet another contest to overtime.
While the Atom finals did not require overtime earlier in the day in Coniston, the games proved equally as close. Emmett Taillefer and Brady Nelson handled the offense for Riverdale, who edged Cedar Park 2-1 in the Atom "B" encounter. Tyler Bailey managed the only goal for Cedar Park.
In the Atom "A" Gold medal game, the Westmount Wolverines blanked the Lo-Ellen Park Lightning 2-0 as Stephane Frappier and Luke Crepeau scored one goal apiece for Westmount.
The championship games bring to a conclusion the 2010-2011 season for the SPHL, with banquets wrapping up the off-ice festivities in the coming weeks.
