The wrap-up to an exciting weekend of hockey, with 28 teams contesting some 70 games at the 2011 SPHL (Sudbury Playground Hockey League) Police Cup, came to an end Sunday evening, but not before the Bantams stretched things out just a little more.
Carter Jibb scored a couple of minutes into overtime, lifting Long Lake past Riverdale 2-1 in the last of the championship games, closing the curtain on three days of playground hockey excitement.
Zachary Pepin opened the scoring for Riverdale with a goal in the first period and that would stand until the third, when Alex Jibb drew Long Lake even, setting the stage for his brother's heroics in O/T.
In the Bantam consolation final, Cedar Park avenged a 2-1 round robin loss to Lo-Ellen, upending their rivals 6-2 on Sunday as T.J. McLaughlin and Alex Mayotte scored two goals apiece for the winners. Mathieu Cirella and Stephane St Louis also found the back of the net for Cedar Park, while Zachary McMahon and Johan Blatt replied for Lo-Ellen.
Make it two for two in the Championship game overtime category as the Peewee encounter sees Kurtis Brisebois netting his fourth goal of the game, propelling Riverdale past Long Lake 4-3. Graham Noble-Poland scored twice in a losing cause, while Brady Vallbacka added a solo marker.
In the consolation match, Nico Presot recorded the hat trick, leading Algonquin past Antwerp 4-1. John Foisey opened the scoring for Antwerp with the only goal of period number one, while Jonathon Zanini capped off the offense with the fourth and final goal for Algonquin.
A wild finish to the Atom Championship as well, as Westmount's Steven Sagle tied the game at two, scoring with just forty seconds remaining, and allowing Luke Crepeau to complete the comeback with the game-winning goal in overtime as Westmount slipped past Lo-Ellen 3-2.
Danny Arsenault opened the scoring for Westmount, while T. Chown and A. Zilio replied in a losing cause for Lo-Ellen. The consolation affair would find Riverdale and Long Lake tied at two with under two minutes remaining, when Miguel Courchesne decided to settle matters.
Courchesne converted on a nifty backhand in tight, giving Long Lake a 3-2 lead with 1:47 to play, and then added an insurance marker moments later as Long Lake went on to register a 5-2 win. Dante Mullin-Santone, Joshua Gravelle and William Lawton also scored for Long Lake, with Trent Gervais and Brady Nelson replying for Riverdale.
Louis Mullin-Belanger scored twice and goaltender Ben Stewart backstopped the McFarlane Lakers with a shutout as the youngsters claimed the Novice crown with a 4-0 whitewash of Long Lake. Kai Mallory and Tyson Pellinen also pitched in with a goal apiece for the Novice Lakers.
Westmount garnered the Novice Consolation title with a 7-2 win over Riverdale, as Cole Lalande paced the attack with a two-goal effort. A very balanced Westmount offense also received goals from Theodore Collin, Nickolas Smith, Kaeleb Edmonds, Spencer Caruso and Jason Diotte, while Tyler Dunn did all the damage for Riverdale, scoring twice.
Action within all divisions of the SPHL will continue for another few weeks, with playoffs commencing in early February, leading to the league finals roughly one month later.
