Italia Flyers Azzurri advance to finals in Barrie
2007-06-10

Yet another solid showing from a local team at the Barrie Spiritfest 2007 came courtesy of the Sudbury Italia Flyers Azzuri U-14 boys who advanced all the way to the finals before settling for Silver. In the round robin portion of the tournament, the Flyers Azzurri met the St Catherines Concord for what would be the first of two encounters between these two teams.

A strong overall team defensive effort combined with a solid effort from keeper Alexi Kubaczek was enough to lift the Flyers past the Concord 2-1. Scoring for the locals was a little tougher to come by in game two as Italia were blanked 1-0 by the Simcoe Strikers.

Needing a win in their final preliminary round game Sunday morning in order to advance to semi-final play, coach Gino Contini's troops toughed out a 3-2 win over Barrie Spirit B, with the Flyers advancing to face to Sarnia Fury. As was the case for many of the contests in this well-matched division, the game produced another exciting battle as Sudbury squeaked past Sarnia 1-0.

Unfortunately, the motivation of revenge proved too much to overcome for the Italia Flyers Azzurri as St Catherines atoned for their earlier loss, shutting down the Sudbury crew 2-0 to walk away with the Boys U-14 banner. All things considered, with the team not beginning SRCSL league play until after the tournament was complete, the Flyers left Barrie extremely encouraged over the early season showing.

The 2007 edition of the Italia Flyers Azzurri includes: Alexi Kubaczek, Travis Luke, Connor Anderson, Sam Hinds, Steven Brown, Jimmy Kongolo, Rob Staszak, Brandon Vance, Cameron Ashe, Steph Houle, Zack Glaude, Sean Chretien, Nick Contini, Robert McDonald, Martin Strasbourg as well as coaches Gino Contini and Scott Hebert.
