Halfway through a very busy seven day stretch which features four games, the Sudbury Wolves have a split to show for it.
A solid though not spectacular 3-1 road win over the Barrie Colts on Wednesday gave way to a 7-3 mauling on home ice Friday at the hands of the Soo Greyhounds - the same team which got clobbered 7-0 at home on Wednesday by the Erie Otters.
Bjorn Bronas got the start versus the Colts and rewarded the Sudbury coaching staff with a 24-save effort as the visitors scored twice in the third period for the win.
Kingston Harris broke the ice for the Wolves with his second of the year early in period two and William Schneid got that one back on the power play later in the frame as the teams finished the contest nearly dead even in shots on goal (26-25 in favour of Sudbury).
Rowan Henderson would net his league leading fourth game-winner of the season to date, making a nifty move with a puck flip past a Barrie defender and then using his speed to drive hard to the net, banging home his own rebound at 6:35 of the third.
Adam Nemec added an empty-net insurance marker with just thirty seconds left to play as the Wolves enter play Sunday still seven points up on the Niagara Ice Dogs for top spot in the Central Division.
The second period of Friday's game against the Soo was far and away the worst 20-minute showing of the season to date for Scott Barney's team, surrendering no less than five goals in a span of under 14 minutes.
Fireworks looked possible from the get-go as the Wolves and Hounds divided a four-goal opening frame right down the middle, with Brayden Bennett and Genc Ula doing the honours for Sudbury and Quinn McKenzie and Travis Hayes starting the scoring parade for Sault Ste Marie.
They would have plenty of company on the scoresheet in the middle frame as Colin Fitzgerald, Noah Laus, Christopher Brown, Jeremy Martin and McKenzie, with his second, chased Sudbury starter Paolo Frasaca, giving the Western Conference crew an insurmountable lead.
The only scoring of period three came off the stick of Sudbury blueliner Luca Blonda as he and his teammates now prepare for a Sunday afternoon rematch with Barrie before taking on the Greyhounds, once again at the Sudbury Arena, Tuesday morning in the School Day Contest.
