U18 AAA Wolves sweep three-game set with the defending champs
2026-11-03

The Sudbury U18 AAA Wolves rode the excitement of a 3-2 home ice overtime win over the North Bay U18 AAA Trappers recently, sweeping a three game set over the defending league champions.

The Trappers forced the three on three overtime session thanks to a late strike from Brayden Hanam but would see joy turned to sadness just 90 seconds later as Owen Angus backhanded home a pass from Logan Moran, propelling Sudbury to their 10th win in 12 outings this year.

In fact, the U18 AAA Wolves have yet to lose in regulation time, their record of 10-0-0-2 (22 points) finding the team in second place, six back of the Soo U18 AAA Greyhounds (14-2-0-0).

Sudbury led 1-0 through two periods of play thanks to a first period power-play snipe from Brayden Baronette before Ty Belanger (Wolves) and Reed Sauve (Trappers) traded goals early in the third.

Returning to North Bay the following evening, the Wolves were backstopped to a rare 1-0 win in Great North Hockey League play as netminder Kesler Koosees made a second period goal from Chase Baronette stand as the game-winner in a contest that featured only eight minutes in penalties assessed.

By the time game three arrived (over the span of six days), the temperament had turned nasty as Sudbury defeated North Bay 5-1 in a penalty-filled affair, mostly on the Trappers side of the scoresheet.

A collective effort offensively spurred the Wolves to victory as Lennox Therrien, Maximus King, Janssen Fransen, Ty Belanger and Chase Baronette filled the net for the homeside, with Brayden Hodges spoiling the shutout bid of Kesler Koosees, beaten only by one second period goal.

The U18 AAA Wolves are now set to compete at the Big Nickel Hockey Tournament beginning on Thursday, with a preliminary round slate that includes St Michael's College (Thursday at 8:00 p.m.), the Niagara North Stars (Friday at 11:00 a.m.), the Toronto Marlboros (Friday at 7:30 p.m.) and the Markham Majors (Saturday at 9:30 a.m.) - with all games on pad 1 of the Gerry McCrory Sports Complex.

The 32-team event which is now limited to just U18 AAA entries features seven of the top teams teams in the province in the form of the: Burlington Eagles (#1), Ajax Pickering Raiders (#3), Barrie Jr Colts (#5), Markham Waxers (#6), Waterloo Wolves (#7), York-Simcoe Express (#8) and Central Ontario Wolves (#9).

The Sudbury U18 AAA Wolves currently find themselves ranked 30th (of 54). Meanwhile, the Sudbury U16 AAA Wolves are off to Sault Ste Marie this weekend, engaged in a three-game set with the Soo Jr Greyhounds.
