It has been quite the month of July for Sudbury tennis sensation Avery Alexander as the 16 year-old prepares to make her debut at the National Bank Open - Canadian Open Tennis Tournament on the first day of August.
Following a loss to Japanese-born pro Erika Sema in Granby (PQ) on July 15th, Alexander travel west to compete at the
Though she would split her two matches last weekend, beating fellow Canadian and University of Arizona junior Martyna Ostrzygalo 6-0, 6-4 before falling to 28 year-old Japanese pro Miho Kuramochi 5-7, 2-6, her performance was enough to earn Alexander a wild card entry into the WTA 125 Odlum Brown VanOpen in Vancouver this weekend.
On Saturday, Alexander picked up a first round win, outlasting 29 year-old Slovakian Martina Okalova 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 and preparing to face 24 year-old Canadian Ana Grubor later today.
On Friday, however, came the biggest news yet as Avery Alexander was qualifying wild card berth in the marquee event in the country, her first opponent at the Canadian Open in Toronto (Sobeys Stadium) next Saturday.
The women's draw at the event includes the likes of world # 1 ranked Aryna Sabalenka as well as Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula, seeded second to fourth on a global level.
Canadians Victoria Mboko (10) and Leylah Fernandez (24) are currently the top-ranked female players in the country while Avery Alexander sits second overall in the junior rankings in Canada.
