Spartans girls tackle teams to host playoff games this weekend
2026-06-30

When it comes to the 19U West Division of the girls tackle football loop competing under the umbrella of the OWFL (Ontario Women's Football League), the "tackling" part is proving to be somewhat problematic for opponents of the Sudbury Spartans.

That is most certainly the case when Sudbury running backs Awosika Olaterere or Maddie Veevers have the ball in their hands.

The talented and quite speedy tandem combined to rush for 469 yards (Olaterere finished with 316 yards, all on her own) and accounted for all seven touchdowns as the Spartans finished regular season play with a spotless 6-0 mark, bouncing the Etobicoke Eagles 46-0 at the James Jerome Sports Complex last Saturday.

Closing out the scoring with a two-point conversion apiece were Caileigh Ryan and Awosika Olaterere as the locals now prepare to host the Cumberland Panthers in their opening playoff encounter this Saturday night (7:30 p.m.).

Cumberland finished in second place in the East Division with a record of 5-1, with the Cornwall Wildcats and the Peel Panthers meeting in the remaining semi-final.

Earlier in the day last Saturday, the Sudbury 16U Spartans completed their season sweep of the Bel Air Lions with relative ease, following up a 48-0 road victory at the end of May with a 62-14 decision to finish the regular season at 3-3.

The 16U Spartans will also play host to the Cumberland Panthers on Saturday with kickoff set for 5:30 p.m.
