In far less than ideal conditions, the Sudbury contingent of track and field athletes competing at the 2026 Canadian Track & Field Championships in Ottawa continued to make the city proud.
Having demolished the SDSSAA senior boys record in Sudbury in May, Anderson Parent earned a bronze medal in the U20 discus, sailing his best throw 53.76 metres in earning a spot on the podium.
The recent graduate of Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School and member of the Air Blastoff Track Club is just three metres or so shy of reaching the qualifying standard for the U20 World Championships. While he was measured at 58.73 metres at the city high-school championships, the event is not considered a sanctioned meet, leaving Anderson with a few more opportunities as he looks to qualify.
Ranked 14th in the country as a still young U20 participant in the 100m dash, Melina Doiron ran her way into the event final, finishing sixth in a time of 11.85 seconds as Tia Porteous earned gold with a clocking of 11.44 seconds.
Heading to the University of Idaho in the fall, Doiron needs to lower her time to 11.70 seconds in order to remain in contention for a spot on the relay team at the World Championships in Oregon in August.
The men's 400m hurdle preliminaries would feature a pair of local athletes, with Corey Lacroix (Track North - 56.38) and Jacob Paille (Air Blastoff - 56.42) ever so close despite running in separate heats.
Paille also slipped in under the 50-second mark in the 400m race, posting a time of 49.34 seconds, good for 15th in a field of 24 runners.
Amanda Syncox (Air Blastoff) closed out her pre-NCAA racing career just falling short of the 400m women's final, her time of 58.46 good for ninth place, just back of Kimara Pollydore (58.41).
Syncox will leave for Oakland University in Michigan in August, looking to compete at 100%, injury-free after a tough go this summer.
In addition to Corey Lacroix, the Track North contingent also featured:
