Some burst on to the scene as grade nine superstars, never once relinquishing their perch atop the SDSSAA (Sudbury District Secondary Schools Athletic Association) track and field event supremacy from start to finish of their high-school careers.
Most senior gold medal winners, however, have travelled a distinctly different trajectory.
After capturing both the 1500m and 3000m at the 2024 city championships in her junior year, Lily Bignucolo would see her times flatline, more or less, for a year.
To suggest that the 2026 season has been a bit of a rebound would be a massive understatement as the Lo-Ellen Park senior has been chopping off time in leaps and bounds, obliterating the northern record books in the process.
"My health was bad," noted Bignucolo, citing thyroid issues which can often be related to low iron levels. "Once I started on my meds, my training has been a lot more effective. I have more energy now."
The 17 year-old who is heading off to run at Laurentian University in the fall followed up her impressive performance at the SDSSAA meet two weeks ago but lowering a pair of NOSSA records in Sudbury this week: 1500m (4:43.02 - old record = 4:52.07 - Emma Tallman) and 3000 (10:12.05 - old record = 10:40.92 - Emily Marcolini).
"I like the 1500m, I really do, but the 3000m is a little more chill," said Bignucolo. "I feel like I am more comfortable in it. In the 1500m, I'm never sure if someone is going to catch me."
That, of course, refers to the two first steps on the road to OFSAA. As she well knows, her 3km time at NOSSA would rank her right around a top-ten finish in the field of 24 that will gather for the all-Ontario showdown that takes place in St Catharines, beginning this Thursday.
"When I am at OFSAA (previously), I found that I had nothing to lose," said Bignucolo. "But this year, I think that maybe I can PB with people pushing me. I just have to be careful with my start because some girls will go out really fast and I have to be aware of that."
Like Bignucolo, Marcus Laframboise entered the current track season having experienced a first place finish in the city most recently two years ago as a junior. In fact, the Lockerby Composite product entered high-school as more of a pure 100m sprinter, until he discovered the hurdles in grade 10.
The fundamentals of this highly technical discipline came courtesy of long-time Vikings' track coach Laura Stanyon, though Laframboise then chose to invest a boatload of time in studying and researching his own race form, rather than connect with one of the local track clubs.
Based on his first place finish at NOSSA in a time of 15.11 - he was hoping to run sub-15 - his approach worked for him.
"My technique is much better now than in grade ten," said Laframboise, who raced in front of a nice handful of family members recently, both from Sudbury as well as the Manitoulin Island area.
"Miss Stanyon taught me the basics but then I watched a lot of You Tube and my best friend (Vance Smith) videotapes me all of the time."
As with many a local senior, previous visits to OFSAA have helped to temper the expectations when it comes to performing at the second largest track and field meet in North America.
"I know that I am not going to win, so I just try and keep up and get faster," said Laframboise.
