Spartans open OP5FL season with a rivalry win
2026-05-27

Batting cleanup - to coin a frequently-used phrase from an entirely different sport setting - the Sudbury Spartans men's squad capped off a wonderful day of football this past Saturday at the James Jerome Sports Complex.

Opening the 2026 OP5FL (Ontario Power Five Football League) season with a win, the Spartans downed the visiting Sault Steelers 30-9, integrating some newcomers into the mix with a healthy core of returning vets as local football teams posted a perfect 4/4 mark on the day.

The Spartans got on the board on their very first possession as quarterback Adam Rocha found Dalton Wilcox on the receiving end of 20 yard touchdown pass, adding another aerial major later as Victor Paajanen hauled in a perfectly-placed throw, scampering 72 yards to the end zone.

The two plays accounted for almost half of the passing yardage for Rocha (10/22 - 185 yards) as the Spartans gradually shifted to a more run-based attack, especially once they had secured the lead.

That was made possible thanks to the success that OP5FL rookie Braeden Beggs enjoyed running behind a workmanlike offensive line as the graduate of both the Confederation Chargers high-school program and the Sudbury Jr Spartans OSFL summer league play racked up 199 yards on 23 carries, pounding the ball home for a pair of second half scores.

Beggs also split the uprights, going 4/4 in the PAT department while Jesse Shoults was credited with a safety touch to close out the scoring for Sudbury. Ronan Provenzano (TD), Brady Smith (PAT) and Mario Jackson (safety touch) put the points on the board for the visitors.

Provenzano proved to be a dual threat for the Sault, accumulating 117 yards on the ground and another 79 as a receiver, the favourite target of QB Matt Gauthier with 79 yards on seven receptions.

Limiting the Steelers' ability to march the ball, the Sudbury defense featured outstanding contributions from Tyson McFadden (4 tackles and a pair of sacks), Kolby McLean (4 tackles), Andrew Kilby (3 tackles and a sack) and Steven Sola (five tackles, an interception - and 109 yards total from three punt returns).

The Spartans are on the road for the next two weeks, visiting the Tri-City Outlaws this Saturday in Guelph before heading to Sault Ste Marie on June 6th and then returning home to welcome the Sarnia Imperials to town on Saturday, June 20th.
