16U Spartans defense alllows nothing in huge win over Oshawa
2026-05-25

Posting a record of 6-1 last summer and advancing to the divisional final before falling to the Huronia Stallions, the 2025 Sudbury 16U Jr Spartans set the bar high for a very talented 2026 edition of the team.

That current grouping, however, shows no signs of backing down from the challenge of following in those footsteps.

Building up a 26-0 lead after one quarter of play, the 16U Jr Spartans gave an enthusiastic home crowd plenty to cheer about Saturday afternoon at the James Jerome Sports Complex, cruising to a 52-2 win over an Oshawa Hawkeyes team that was competing at the OSFL (Ontario Summer Football League) "AAA" level on year ago.

"I thought everybody played amazing; everybody was doing their job," noted inside linebacker Dexter Mailloux, one of three Jr Spartans on the defensive side of the ball who racked up fumble recoveries on the day (along with Ostin Parro and Caleb Middaugh).

The early lead allowed head coach Dan Yoisten and company to not only gauge his starters' ability to keep their eyes on the prize, but also allowed for some OSFL learnings for newcomers to the Sudbury program.

"We focused on just playing our game, getting to the ball on defense, making sure that we held them back so that our offense could go out and score some points," said Mailloux. "And in games like this, it allows our back-ups to get some good reps in."

The offense most definitely did their part, led by a three touchdown performance from running back Michael Bisschops and individual majors for Emmanuel Abiodun and Moshood Adeleye (both on passes from Kade Campbell) and a ramble to paydirt for Thomas Deredin.

The Jr Spartans successfully executed all six of their two-point conversion attempts, with the balance of their scoring coming courtesy of a pair of safeties conceded by the Hawkeyes.

Defensively, the Sudbury lads were clearly on their game, with every individual embracing their role on this cohesive unit - including the recently crowned junior boys shot put champion who creates havoc right in the middle of the defense.

"I like playing "mike" (middle linebacker) because I am a heavier guy and in the middle, I can help fill that "A" gap," said Mailloux. "I know that people like running down the middle."

As offenses become more and more deceptive, the pressure mounts on Mailloux and others to better their game to keep pace with those opponents who have the skill sets needed to put points on the board in a hurry.

"I want to learn how to react faster and know exactly what gap the runner is going to hit, so I can get more tackles for loss and hold them to fewer yards," he stated.

The Sudbury 16U Jr Spartans will take to the road for the first time this summer on Saturday, battling a Scarborough Thunder squad that took it on the chin (to the tune of a 32-0 loss) at the hands of the Toronto Jr Argos.
