Twenty-one time Copper Cliff Jewellers Trophy recipients as SDSSAA senior boys football playoff champions.

Fifteen time recipients of the Birks-Ellis-Ryrie Cup as junior playoff title holders.

In 1969, the St Charles College Cardinals laid claim to their one and only NOSSA crown - and in so doing, became the last local senior team to hold this honour.

There is much to be proud of in the land of SCC football and come June 10th, that pride is sure to be on fully display as the program is inducted into the Greater Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame under the Norm Mayer Dynasty Award classification.

"It's such a long history with so much tradition," noted former player and coach Mike Fabiilli, he himself inducted as part of the Class of 2018.

"I got involved watching my older brother play," he recalled. "I was just 11 years old and watched practices on Sunday and after practices, there was a team mass."

The storied names of coaches Father Black and Chris Bartolucci and Dino Del Ben and Brian Ceppetelli and, more recently Rob Zanatta (who retires this summer) and Jordan Cecchetto conjure images of a certain continuity, lessons passed along from one generation to the next.

"There were certain things that were done a certain way when I began playing and we would the same things - and then eventually expand," said Fabiilli. "Football taught so many life skills: discipline, coming to practice, following the rules that we had."

"That discipline that you learned carried on into life."

In fact, for as much as Fabiilli and others will insist that there will always be an extra special feeling when donning the Scarlet and Grey, the truth is the nature of the specific sport in which he and thousands of others were embedded at St Charles College also plays a huge part in the sense of nostalgia that has been built.

"I just think that football is the ultimate team sport," he said. "So many guys and so many friendships. It's such a wide range of athletes - big ones, small ones - and they all find a position on the team."

Still, in the legacy that Cardinals football would establish, there were foundational pieces.

"Ball control and defense - and the fundamentals: blocking and tackling," said Fabiilli. " We weren't very fast. We were small and slow one year, slow and small the next. But Chris (Bartolucci) and I worked very well together."

That togetherness of the SCC football brotherhood will be celebrated come June 10th at the Caruso Club, along with the remaining Class of 2026: Tracy Fleury (curling), Caroline Ehrhardt (track & field), Denis Vachon (gymnastics), Peter Michelutti Sr (hockey), Denis Gauthier (basketball; H-S sports), Mike Miron (lacrosse) and Brad Rienguette (posthumous - fastball).

Additionally, the Greater Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame committee announced this past week the selection of their two primary award recipients of the 2025-2026 sports season: Lo-Ellen Park Knights Track & Field team (2025) as Sportspersons of the Year and Jesse Winters (Sudbury Masters Running Club) for the Bill Roman Award.

Tickets are selling for $75/person and can be purchased by contacting Randy Pascal via email at info@sudburysports.com, or by phone at (705) 698-1627.
