A soccer sojourn in the sensational setting that is the coast of Spain

The recent 2-1 extra time victory posted by the Lo-Ellen Park Knights junior boys soccer team in the final of the 31st Annual Nipissing Invitational was surely an exciting one.

Few likely found it more exciting than Knights’ keeper Aaron Flanagan - though one could hardly blame the 15 year-old grade nine student at LEP for looking forward with even more anticipation to his upcoming soccer adventure in 2026-2027.

Having suited up this past indoor season with a 17U squad from North Bay in PISL (Provincial Indoor Soccer League) play, Flanagan recently committed to attending CF Benedorm in Spain beginning this September, immersing himself in a nine-month setting that is sure to help improve his already impressive skills.

“Here, we practice two days a week – and then I am always doing stuff in my basement, getting my hands on the ball,” said Flanagan. “There, it’s five days a week, two practices a day. I am sure the guys will be way better than me, to start, but I will be able to catch up. I am more raw but they are already near their potential.”

The middle of three children in the family - though a fourth has been welcome, the result of an exchange student program for a young woman, from Spain, no less - Flanagan first made his way to the pitch at the age of eight, moving on from the Sudburnia ranks to being a member of the GSSC (Greater Sudbury Soccer Club) Impact the past few years.

A true enjoyment for his position certainly goes a long way - but the layering of some of the very specific skill-sets required to thrive between the posts is truly what helps open doors, later in the journey.

"My communication with my teammates has always been good," suggested Flanagan. "And I was never afraid to dive or to charge out to grab a ball."

Flawless positioning, when it comes to being a soccer keeper, is somewhat of a never-ending goal, a search for improvement that comes in smaller and smaller increments over time. That said, competing with an Impact team that could be under siege a little more often than the norm when facing GTA opponents is not necessarily a curse when it comes to individual development.

"There were a lot of breakaways," said Flanagan with a smile. "I had a chance to practice my one v ones a lot. Even if you let in a lot, it's good to get those reps in during a game."

Regardless of where this leads, there is no denying the young man possesses the mindset of a goalie, having spent hours and hours refining his skills locally with soccer goaltending guru Chris Belanger.

“It’s in those moments where it’s a 1-1 game and there’s a penalty awarded in the last minute and you make the save and the whole team comes rushing in,” said Flanagan. “Those are the moments that make me want to be a keeper.”

And if the penalty kick eludes you?

“There are ups and downs to being a keeper,” said Flanagan, with a smile.
