The Greater Sudbury Cubs evened their record at 1-1-0 at the 2026 Centennial Cup in Summerside (P.E.I.), downing the Truro Bearcats 4-1 last Friday night.
After dropping an 8-3 decision to the Toronto Patriots some 24 hours earlier, head coach Darryl Moxam suggested that the key was not reading too much into the lopsided setback.
"I think the biggest thing was having them realize that we just didn't have a good game in game one," said Moxam. "There were mistakes that we made in that game that we hadn't seen in months and months."
"This was one of our poorest efforts in likely a couple of months - and that's going to happen, at times."
Limiting Truro to just 24 shots on net while benefitting from goals courtesy of Lincoln Moore (2), Spencer Horgan and Noah Kohan, the Cubs got back to the style of play that was their calling card through much of their 12-game undefeated run to the NOJHL title.
"We got back to protecting the middle of the ice," said Moxam. "On the back end, our D were getting spread apart between the dots and they (Toronto) were capitalizing. As far as our forwards were concerned, we had all three guys caught way too low too often."
After being pulled in game one, Iain Wintle bounced back with a more than solid effort, his team needing more of the same as they look to earn at least one more round robin victory with upcoming games against the Flin Flon Bombers (Monday) and Collège Francais de Longeuil (Tuesday).
"We like where we're at right now, no question about it," said Moxam. "We know that if we play like game two, we have an opportunity to beat everybody. But if we play like we did in game one, we're going to have a hard time winning games."
