Sudbury quartet stick to singles play at OFSAA Badminton Championships
2026-05-04

For the second straight year, Nyah Robinson (St Charles College) would walk away with local bragging rights in terms of SDSSAA representation at the OFSAA Badminton Championships.

Competing in the High-School Girls Singles event, the multi-sport talent was the only Sudbury athlete to post a winning record in Toronto, finishing with a mark of 3-2 and eliminated in the "A" Draw Consolation semi-final.

Robinson started strong, upending both Camille Leclair (EOSSAA) and Qingyuan Chi (ROPSSAA) right out of the gate, thus avoiding the "B" Draw even after losing to Kaitlyn Lee (YRAA) in round three.

She would then earn one extra match thanks to a win over Nadine Buchanen (NCSSAA), but was stopped one step short of the consolation final, taken down by Efan Duan (SWOSSAA) in the round of four.

Competing in the "High-School" classification in Boys Singles events, both Ryan Corrigan (Lo-Ellen Park Knights) and Blake Chenier (ESC Horizon Aigles) hit the win column twice, tagged with three setbacks as well, though both arrived there in slightly different fashions.

Corrigan went 1-1 in both the "A" and "B" draw, registering victories over Saket Virmani (GHAC) in game one and Hetian Tong (GHAC) in game three before being sent packing by Marcus Ng (YRAA) in "B" Draw Consolation play.

Chenier also opened with a win, beating Marcus Ng, but was saddled with a pair of losses before rebounding with a second "W" - this one against Logan Judd (GBSSA) - to stave off "B" Consolation elimination for one round, succumbing to Vidhun Nayayakkara (NCSSAA) in his fifth and final game.

Collège Notre-Dame Alouettes senior Chiana Rocca will have to chalk this OFSAA trip up to experience, defeated in three straight matches, starting with the eventual gold medal medal winner (Kristine May Porfirio) from Castlebrooke Secondary School in Brampton.
