Five win three straight to complete the comeback, repeating as BSL champs
2026-04-30

Much like game four, the Sudbury Five did not come bursting out of the gates with their BSL (Basketball Super League) title on the line in the final showdown with the K-W Titans Wednesday night in Kitchener.

A Q2 31-15 outburst, however, not only gave Sudbury a 50-41 lead at the half, but provided them with an advantage they would never relinquish, closely out a 90-89 victory and a repeat as BSL champs far more comfortably than the final score might suggest.

Great defense and offensive contributions at key times across the lineup proved to be the recipe for victory once again as the Five climbed all the way back from their early 0-2 series deficit to capture the best of five affair, three games to two.

Veterans Charlie Marquardt (19) and Duane Notice (18) were leaned upon heavily (87 combined minutes of playing time), with Emmanuel Akot feeding off a huge three-point basket late in game four, jumping in with the scoring leaders with 18 points of his own.

Allen Billinger (11), Alex Kotov (10) and Tyquane Goard (9) came through with a layer of secondary scoring while Antoine Mason (21), Ty Groce (20) and Tarkus Ferguson (16) led the charge for the Titans, who were without veteran Tyshon Pickett, injured late in the Monday night matchup in Sudbury.

The difference was quarters two and three often came from the ability Sudbury had to score with greater regularity from distance, finishing the game at almost 50% from beyond the arc (11/23 - 47.8%), while former Five guard Jaylen Bland had an off-night at 1/10.

The homeside did manage to help keep things close by capitalizing more efficiently on their trips to the foul line, garnering a ten-point advantage thanks to a 23/31 effort versus 13/28 for the defending champs.

Rounding out the Sudbury championship roster are Devante Jamison, Nervens Demosthene, Michael Okafor, Antonio Davis Jr, Guan Ziyu, Cecil Lee, head coach Joey Puddister and assistant coach Georges Serresse.
