The Hilbert College Hawks might not enjoy the same name recognition in northern Ontario as do the bluebloods of NCAA basketball: the Duke Blue Devils, the North Carolina Tar Heels, the UCLA Bruins and the Michigan Wolverines, for instance.

But given the rarity that it is for any Sudbury-based men's basketball talent to make their way south of the border, news of Tristan Imgrund committing to the NCAA Division III program based out of Hamburg, New York (just outside of Buffalo) is quite exciting, nonetheless.

The senior guard who supplemented his time with the Bishop Alexander Carter Gators with far greater visibility via GTA-based programs such as Hoopzone (Ontario Basketball League) and Red Rush Canada (AAU squad) has found a home for the fall of 2026, one that combines his somewhat unique academic interest with the type of basketball skills that were recently displayed in the SDSSAA All-Star Game.

Pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Intelligence & Data Analysis, Imgrund received the school's top academic scholarship, all while catching the eye of Hilbert College men's basketball coach Rob deGrandpre and his staff.

"NCAA Division III basketball is becoming a fast-paced game and Tristan's ability to shoot beyond the arc as well as score off the dribble were qualities that impressed our staff," noted deGrandpre recently.

"Tristan meshed well with our guys during a recruiting visit and he thoroughly enjoyed his time on campus."

It has been a few years now that Imgrund, who was born in Newmarket but moved to Sudbury in 2021 has focused on pursuing this dream, albeit in an unconventional pathway.

"I stayed in Sudbury for all four years of high-school instead of leaving for a prep school in a bigger city," said Imgrund. "I don't know of any local boys who have gone on to play NCAA basketball (at any level) in years."

Competing in the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference, coach deGrandpre and the Hawks finished smack dab in the middle of the nine-team loop this past season, posting a record of 8-8 in a grouping that includes Penn State Behrend (14-2 - Erie, Pennsylvania) and the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (13-3 - just south of the Steel City).

Graduating just a pair of seniors from their 17-man roster, the Hawks lineup will not be an easy one to crack early for Imgrund, though coach deGrandpre is anxious to give him a shot.

"We are glad there's a genuine fit here for Tristan to excel both academically and athletically," he said.
