Cubs make it eight straight with first overtime win of the playoffs
2026-04-08

For the first time this year, the Greater Sudbury Cubs were taken to overtime in NOJHL post-season play, 2026.

Not that this would stop the league powerhouse from extending their playoff winning streak this spring to eight games, completing their second straight four-game sweep with a 4-3 win over the Soo Eagles Tuesday night in Michigan.

Late-season acquisition and former OHLer Noah Aboflan scored exactly three minutes into period number four, with his team on the power-play as the Cubs advanced to the league finals, awaiting the winner of the Timmins Rock - Hearst Lumberjacks semi-final affair that Timmins leads three games to none.

Sudbury struck first in game four as Grant Booth and Owen King bulged the twine 61 seconds apart a little past the midway point of period one, with Brendan Boberg getting one of those goals back before the frame came to a close.

Daks Klinkhammer (Cubs) and C.J. Zaharias (Eagles) traded markers in the middle stanza with Gabriel Clark forcing overtime at the 13:00 mark of period three, netting his first of the playoffs.

The contest was a relatively even affair as the Soo outshot Sudbury 39-38, with Matthew Vahramian recording the win in net for the nickel city lads in search of a third straight visit to the Centennial Cup, while Jace Knoerle was tagged with the loss, his only goal allowed on 16 shots being, unfortunately, the game-winner.

A total of nine minor penalties were assessed in the contest, with the one additional one to the Eagles (five vs four) proving extremely costly. The Rock and Lumberjacks are matching up in game four Wednesday night in Timmins, with the northern clash resuming in Hearst on Friday, with game five, if necessary.
