The Ontario / Sudbury mixed doubles team of Kira Brunton and Jake Horgan have successfully booked their place in quarter-final action Friday night at the 2026 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Surrey (B.C.) - and they could not have done so in a more impressive fashion.
The pair who have long been mainstays in their youth of the Sudbury curling scene not only ran the table in Pool D with a record of 6-0, but had only one game where their margin of victory was less than five points.
That dominance started early as Brunton and Horgan toppled Courtney Woo / Daniel Wenzek (from B.C. - 9-3), Mackenzie Arbuckle / Aaron Arbuckle (from MB - 8-3) and Connie Hulme / Peter Van Strien (from Nunavut - 17-2) in the opening two days of competition.
No slowing down for the fourth ranked team in the country in the second half of round robin play as victories over Melissa Adams / Alex Robichaud (from NB - 11-6), Jessica Wiseman / Greg Smith (from NFLD - 7-1) and Marlee Powers / Luke Saunders (from NS - 7-6) capped off an unblemished run through their preliminary games.
With 12 of the 28 teams advancing to the playoff round, Brunton and Horgan will get to sit back and await the winners of the 1:00 p.m. draw, finishing tops in the entire field as facing the winner of the #8/#9 matchup of Serena Gray-Withers / Victor Pietrangelo (ON) and Nancy Martin / Rylan Kleiter (SK) on Friday.
It has been a particularly busy week for Kira Brunton as she announced this week the new creation of Team Brunton 2026-2027 which brings together an entire quartet of Sudbury curlers as Kendra Lilly (vice), Jamie Smith (second) and Lauren Rajala (lead) all join forces, competing in Northern Ontario.
