Whether it was from beyond the arc or down low in the paint, the GSBA (Greater Sudbury Basketball Association) U13 Storm boys were bringing it recently at their latest trek to an IEM Tournament in Newmarket.
Five straight wins was more than enough for gold as the Sudbury lads drained no less than ten three-point baskets, defeating the IEM Spartans from Aurora 62-44 as Ridge Maskevich and Logan Martikkala were especially hot from distance, sinking a troika of threes apiece, with Rohan Saidi-Smith also finding his range.
There was a different strategy altogether in place in game two as the Storm relied on big men David Olili and Sawyer Kerr (11 points each) and Reid Manella (7 rebounds) to power their way past the Hall of Fame Hustle (Bradford), 62-52.
Speedy guard Nehemiah Esmie registered a game-high 15 point effort while Médric Raymond sank back to back threes in the second quarter, allowing Sudbury to extend their lead and maintain control of the game.
Logan Martikkala showed the way with 15 points (5 X 3) and Mason Kamuntu chipped in with nine as the GSBA reps improved to 3-0 thanks to a 58-24 drubbing of the Thornhill Thunder - Purple.
A win in game four and the Storm were off to the finals - and this one was never in doubt as Sudbury bolted to a big first quarter lead and got absolutely everyone involved in a 57-15 win over the Thornhill Thunder - Silver, with Tejada Gieselman topping the scoring charts with 11 points.
The depth of the talented northern crew was on full display in the final as the local hoopsters closed out their tournament in style, more than doubling the Hall of Fame Hustle, with the scoreboard reading 66-32.
Mérick Nadeau (14 points) was the leading scorer for a team which featured all 11 players with at least one basket. Nadeau was rewarded for his efforts, named MVP of the gold medal encounter as the U13 Storm boys now look forward to the Inter-City Saints Tournament at the end of March.
