Upstart Wolves take down a pair of heavyweights
2026-01-19

A rebuilding Sudbury Wolves team are playing like they have something to prove.

Somewhat begrudgingly, both the Flint Firebirds and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies would acknowledge that the young, upstart crew from northern Ontario did just that over the weekend.

Locked in a tight battle with the Brampton Steelheads for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference of the OHL, the Wolves managed to sweep a pair of home games from teams ranking right up near the top of their divisions in the past few days.

Following up on a 2-1 loss Thursday night on the road to the North Bay Battalion in a very well played affair, the Sudbury lads jumped all over the Firebirds (30-11-2-2) Friday night, up 4-0 after one, scoring the first goal of period two and cruising to a 7-2 win.

Jan Chovan netted a pair of goals while linemate Jean-Cristoph Lemieux added a tally and three helpers as the Wolves had plenty of support on the attack for far-more-than-solid netminder Bjorn Bronas (33 saves on 35 shots).

Parker Smith (first OHL goal), Artem Gonchar, Genc Ula and Adam Nemec rounded out the scoring for Sudbury as Jimmy Lombardi and Jacob Battaglia answered for the visitors.

Playing in the first interleague game since the 1999-2000 season, the Wolves extended their winning streak over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies to three games (albeit over a stretch of more than 25 years), downing the QMJHL reps 5-3 Sunday at home.

The line of Blake Clayton (2G + 2A), Rowan Henderson (G + 2A) and Ethan Dean (A) were front and centre in this affair as the local juniors upset a Rouyn team that sits tied for second in their bracket at 23-12-4-2.

Luca Blonda and Jan Chovan also found the back of the net for a Sudbury crew that exited the weekend four points clear of the Steelheads. Projected late first / early second round prospect Lars Steiner from Switzerland scored twice for the Huskies, with Thomas Verdon netting the other.

With Jacob Frasca sidelined with an upper-body injury, Bjorn Bronas was pressed into action for the third time in four days, showing no ill-effects (27 saves; 30 shots) as the native of Illinois has posted a series of games where he has equaled or surpassed a save percentage of .900 in seven of his last eight outings.

Just a two game set awaits coach Scott Barney and company this week - but it's a tough one as the powerhouse Brantford Bulldogs travel to Sudbury on Friday before the Wolves make their generational visit to Quebec on Sunday, facing Rouyn-Noranda in the rematch.
