This Week in Sports looks back on the week of January 23rd - January 30th, 1970
Just under one week ago (2026), the Sudbury Wolves made their first post-Christmas trip to Sault Ste Marie and were unceremoniously dumped by the Greyhounds, the final score reading 7-2.
Ironically, the score was the same, though far more amenable to the local junior hockey faithful when the teams met some 56 years ago this month in what was then a Northern Ontario Hockey Association Junior "A" encounter.
Mickey Jurynec and John Tressider scored two goals apiece for Sudbury, with Gary Holt, Dennis Howard and Bob Sykes adding a solo marker each. Julio Francella and Bill Slewidge replied for the Soo, welcomed to the nickel city by the 4500 or so fans on hand at the Sudbury Arena.
Dan Burkhart recorded the win between the pipes, making 31 saves for the Wolves who peppered the tandem of Ken McKenzie and Joe Haines with 44 shots. With the win, Sudbury moved into first place in league standings, with the lowly Chelmsford Canadiens next up for the Wolves.
***********************************************The Creighton Badminton Club attended the International Junior Tournament hosted by the Toronto Granite Club with a very young contingent, with all but Gienek Ksiazkiewicz (attending York University) competing in the 14 and under division.
With most of their members busy with high-school exams, it was left to the likes of Brenda Semeniuk (lost out in women's singles SF) and Lilly Corrazzini (captured women's singles consolation final) to help uphold the honour of the highly touted northern club.
The men's pairing of Lucio Fabris and Elio Cozzarini took top spot in men's doubles play, though both would fall victim to the #1 seeded player in the United States in men's singles play, with Fabris settling for a silver medal.
Other club members expected to make some noise at the upcoming provincial championships included Kim Mulligan, Bob Pilon, Linda Fabris, Kevin Sherbanuk and Joanne Mitroff.
*************************************************Decades before the sport would re-appear again on the campus of Laurentian University, the rink of Vern Dow (skip), Paul Addison (vice), David Brood (second) and lead Gregory Simmons would be selected to represent L.U. at the Brock University Bonspiel.
Dow also skipped the Laurentian foursome that was part of the 16-team field in 1969, picking up a win in their first game before losing two straight. Dow began his curling career as a youngster in Flin Flon, Manitoba.
Still with curling, the Don Dumontelle rink from the Coniston Curling Club (Ed Traill, Leo Boyer, Gerry Cleaver) and the Bert Chisnell quartet from the Sudbury Curling Club (Bill Groom, Barry Chisnell, Bob Barnard) will make their way over to the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club to take part in the NOCA playdowns.
**************************************************All six teams which comprise the Sudbury Midget Hockey League were in action as Young Hockey Canada Night kicked off at Sudbury Arena. A fine baseball player in his own right, Chipper Marcotte was awarded the Bruce Greenfield Memorial Trophy as the MVP of the evening's festivities.
Marcotte scored once and added three assists as the Steelworkers doubled the Police 6-3 in a match-up of the top two teams in the league. Remaining contests had the Lions thumping the Firemen 7-2 while the Wolves edged Castle Heating 3-2.
Joining Marcotte on the scoresheet were teammates Bill Dillabough (2), Richard Longchamp, Mike Czerwenic and Tony Thibault while Boris Fesyk (2) and Mike Gaba handled matters for the Police.
Marcotte was named first star of this game, with Doug Bonhomme (Police) and Jim Horsfall (Steel) rounding off the accolades. Rick Rebellato buried the hat trick to show the way for the Lions while Peter Fallon scored twice for the Wolves.
*************************************************The Laurentian Voyageurs basketball team won their sixth game in seven tries, downing the Ryerson Rams 82-61, but head coach John Dewar cautioned that a similar effort would not get it done against the Waterloo Lutheran Golden Hawks one night later.
At least standout John McKibbon was at his best - 23 points and 28 rebounds - joined in the double digit parade by teammates Les Kennedy, Ray Owens and Gord Verge, all with ten point games.
***************************************************Nickel Teen Ski Club skiers Dave Flowers and Virginia Medley led the way as the locals absolutely dominated Northern Ontario Alpine Cup series held in Powassan over the weekend.
Flowers and Medley swept both the slalom and giant slalom events, the latter on the women's side boasting a huge Sudbury flavour as Medley (from Onaping Falls) was followed by Diane Mullock (Copper Cliff), Andrea Atchison (Sudbury High) and Linda Atchison (Sudbury High).
