Kashawn Aitcheson was already public enemy number one in these parts long before his first period hat-trick on Friday played a part in securing a home and home sweep for the Barrie Colts over the Sudbury Wolves.
A talented defenseman who was drafted 17th overall in the 2025 NHL draft by the New York Islanders this past summer, Aitcheson simply piled on ways in which to draw the ire of the local fan base in this latest encounter.
Between game-winning goals in overtime in the past and the fact that he was the central figure in the bounty controversy that landed Wolves' team captain Nathan Villeneuve a lengthy suspension in March of 2024, Aitcheson has done little to endear himself to partisans of the Wolves.
And while the latest chapter may have been written on Friday, the challenge of the early Barrie lead which chased Sudbury starter Finn Marshall just a little over 13 minutes in was not one the Wolves were unable to overcome on this particular night.
Thanks to an impressive effort in relief from 16 year-old puck stopper Owen Leonard, a highly-reel goal as part of a three-point effort from the afore-mentioned Villeneuve and an overall spirited effort by the home side, the game stood tied at 3-3 heading into the third period of play.
Unfortunately, defensive miscues on goals from Alex Assadourian (6:26) and William Schneid (15:46) ultimately spelled the demise of the Woofers, dropping a 6-3 affair after being beaten 6-2 in Barrie one night earlier.
Villeneuve managed to squeeze one goal between the troika that Aitcheson potted in the opening twenty minutes, each which came complete with completely unnecessary on-ice theatrics from the goal scorer in question, leaving the Wolves trailing 3-1 heading to the middle stanza.
Villeneuve's second of the night, accepting a lovely stretch pass from Hudson Martin before undressing a Colts' defender one on one gave the large and quite boisterous crowd on hand something to get excited about five minutes into the second.
Less than a minute later, a spirited bout that would see Sudbury forward Henry Doucet giving up nearly eight inches in height as he traded blows in a lengthy tilt with Colts' blueliner Gabriel Eliasson only added to the buzz in the rink.
When Alex Pharand redirected a shot/pass from Rowan Henderson to deadlock the game at threes before the end of the frame, one sensed the local juniors might be in position to earn the split.
'Twas not to be however for the last place squad that continues to encounter difficulty closing out tight encounters. On Thursday in Barrie, the Wolves sat tied at 2-2 midway through the game, Jan Chovan and Liam Louds trading goals with Bode Stewart and Joe Salandra.
The Colts, however, would close out the game with four unanswered goals - Nicholas Desiderio, Kashawn Aitcheson and two from Brad Gardiner - as the Wolves prepare to play host to the Peterborough Petes on Sunday afternoon.
