Sure, there have been some blowouts along the way - but when push came to shove and the "crème de la crème" of SDSSAA Senior Girls Flag Football took to the field on Thursday, the fans on hand were in for a treat.
Ironically, both games would finish with the scoreboard reading 20-14 as the Champlain Requins downed the Macdonald-Cartier Panthères in the "B" clash while the Lasalle Lancers snapped a 14-14 tie with the Lo-Ellen Park Knights in the final 90 seconds, earning their second straight title in the process.
"It's just so nice that I get to be part of this," noted 16 year-old Lasalle running back Lucie Brouse, recording a pair of touchdowns, including the game-winner, and looking over at a grouping of her senior teammates rejoicing in what would be their final appearance with Lancers flag football.
"I am so happy to get a chance to play with these girls - and so sad to see them go," added Brouse. "They're such amazing people."
Joining Brouse on the scoresheet for Lasalle were Yasmine Ahmed (TD) and Amelia Belland (2 X PAT), with Maddie Veevers and Isabella Perry reaching the end zone for Lo-Ellen, both majors converted by Abbey Dagostino.
Marching the field with time ticking off the clock, the Lancers relied on those who had been there before to calm things down.
"Izzy (Roy), in the huddle, is amazing," said Brouse. "She is so kind and she just makes sure that everyone knows exactly what is going on."
"It's wonderful."
Since joining the team in grade nine, Brouse has lined up at running back, slotback, defensive rusher in addition to playing special teams a fair bit. On this night, however, there was no denying her go-to position of preference.
"I feel like I would rather play offense," she noted. "There's a lot more adrenaline that comes with it. Just running the ball, getting the touchdowns, making the crowd go wild - it's a great feeling."
It was a feeling that Marissa McLean (TD), Dalis Bélanger (TD), Émilie Beaulieu (TD), Malika Grenon (2 PT convert) and all of their Champlain teammates would experience after settling for silver one year ago.
The Panthères countered with touchdowns from Marquise Castonguay and Callie Couillard, with the latter also adding a pair of PATs in a losing cause.
Weather permitting, there is talk of a SDSSAA Girls Flag Football All-Star game to be played, tentatively on the evening of (Monday) November 10th.
