Eidan Macartney comes up big for the Cubs, netting GWG in OT

The Greater Sudbury Cubs snapped an abbreviated two game losing skid Sunday afternoon in Blind River, though it did take some additional effort to make it happen.

After kicking off the NOJHL Showcase last week in Sudbury with a workmanlike 4-2 win over the Soo Thunderbirds, the Cubs fell victim to an ultra efficient Powassan Voodoos squad backstopped by a stellar performance from netminder Cole Vreugdenhil, suffering a 6-2 setback.

Vreugdenhil shone bright with a 39-save outing and his teammates netted six goals on just 14 shots in toppling the two-time defending league champs.

Caleb Dawson paced the Voodoos with a pair of tallies while singletons came courtesy of Ryan Saginaw, Jax Pereira, Jackson Marnell and Cayden Kowal, with Eidan Macartney and Noah Kohan countering in a losing cause.

Coming off an 0-2 record at the Showcase, the Hearst Lumberjacks also found their footing versus the Cubs as regular season play resumed on Thursday at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex, the visitors scoring four times in the first period alone to subdue Sudbury by the same 6-2 score.

Keenan Quenneville drilled home the first two snipes of the game to get the Lumberjacks off and running, with teammates Cole Miller, Chase Thompson, Henry Ouellet and Ty McKay all joining him in the goal scoring department.

Mateo Signoretti and Nolan Newton handled the offense for coach Darryl Moxam and company as the team took advantage of a road encounter to propel themselves back into the win column.

The Cubs overcame a 2-1 deficit heading to period three in Blind River, jumping ahead 3-2, surrendering that lead but earning the victory on a strike from Eidan Macartney just 21 seconds into the three on three overtime session.

Nolan Newton and Wyatt Jarratt traded first period markers before Shyler McGahey gave the homeside their only lead, accounting for the only scoring in the middle stanza.

Kaedyn Long and Daks Klinkhammer sparked the Sudbury rally only to see Jonah McIndoo force overtime with his seventh goal of the year with less than four minutes to play.

With a record of 6-5-0-0, the Cubs prepare for another three in three stretch, hosting the French River Rapids Thursday in Sudbury before heading west to tackle the Soo Eagles (Friday) and Soo Thunderbirds (Saturday) in rapid succession.
