After winning just a single game in regular season play, the Laurentian Voyageurs men’s baseball team captured two of their first three outings at the OUA Regionals in Brampton, advancing to the finals before bowing out with a loss to the University of Toronto Blues.
The Voyageurs kicked things off on Friday with a 10-7 win over the TMU (Toronto Metropolitan University) Bold as Laurentian overcame a 6-1 deficit, scoring nine runs between the fifth and sixth innings in pulling away with the "W".
The bottom of the L.U. order came through in a big way versus the bold as the likes of Dylan Rudge (3/4 - 2 runs scored) and Luke Arruda (1/2 with a walk; 2 runs scored) were among the main offensive catalysts, with Kyle Kennedy (1/3 - 2 runs; 2 RBIs) also contributing nicely.
The northern lads saw their record fall back to the .500 mark thanks to a 15-10 loss at the hands of the eventual champs, though the team continued to swing the bat well.
Needing a victory to secure their spot in the championship encounter, the Laurentian lads produced their most well-rounded effort of the fall, thumping the York Lions 11-2 as the bats and the arms came together at just the right time.
Starter Ryan Lacasse allowed just two hits and an equal number of runs over eight innings work, striking out six and walking four. Support at the plate came courtesy of long-time Sudbury Voyageurs' teammate Devun Madore who drove in five runs with a pair of hits, including a home run.
A gutsy effort in the final was kicked off by Laurentian pitcher Jonathan O'Reilley (3 runs over 4.1 innings) as the Voyageurs trekked out no less than six different arms to the mound, trailing U of T 3-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth when the Blues broke it open with a four-run outburst.
With all but one player on this roster eligible to return in 2026, coach Patrick Whalen has high hopes for what lies ahead.
