A flurry of scoring before things settled down
2025-09-16

There's likely no better way to kickoff a new season of high-school girls flag football than with some fireworks.

The St Benedict Bears and Marymount Regals combined to put 90 points up on the scoreboard in the very first game of the fall schedule - so I guess that kind of counts, doesn't it?

Olaterere Awosika registered three touchdowns and Elsa Blum added a pair as the Bears outscored the Regals 49-41 in a contest that went back and forth from start to finish.

Sienna Laurent and Caileigh Ryan chipped in with one TD apiece while kicker Reece Chaumont was a flawless 7/7 in the point after department for the winners.

Leah Serre matched the output of Olaterere with three majors of her own for the Regals while Mina McCoshen, Lylah Jebreen and Pepper Sloan also crossed the goal line once each, the latter adding a pair of two-point conversions while Bella Massimiliano split the uprights with a PAT of the single point variety.

Finishing the contest with four touchdown throws, veteran St Benedict QB Ella O'Shaughnessy suggested that there was a least one contributing factor, beyond the sheer athleticism on both sides, that led to the offensive extravaganza at the James Jerome Sports Complex.

"It's our first year with these flags; it's definitely more difficult to grab them," said the 17 year-old who played wide receiver and on defense back in grade nine before sliding in to her comfort zone at quarterback.

"We no longer have that flag in the back so you almost have to run beside them to grab the flag. And you have to go for the actual flag, not the belt. The ones last year, if you touched the belt, the flag fell off."

As much as anything, O'Shaughnessy was pleased with the manner in which her team was able to distribute the ball nicely through a wide variety of skilled receivers and runners.

"When everyone is scoring and everyone is doing well, then everyone is happy - the whole team is happy," she said. "It helps to bring morale up for everyone."

Things settled down notably for the second of four Senior Girls Division A battles on Monday as the Lasalle Lancers rode scoring plays from Mila Rodgers (TD), Edee McCall (TD) and Mya Yerkie (PAT) to a 13-0 win over the Horizon Aigles.

Even less scoring in game three as Maddie Veevers picked up the only six-point score of the game, with Sophia Legendre adding the convert in a 7-0 Lo-Ellen Park Knights whitewashing of the St Charles College Cardinals.

Closing off the evening with an all-Valley showdown as Tyla MacLeod makes her way to the end zone on two separate occasions, the second of which was followed by a PAT from Makinley Bertrand as the Bishop Carter Gators bested the Confederation Chargers 13-6.
