With just a single year of NCAA experience under her belt, Michigan Wolverines freshman sensation and Sudbury native Syla Swords has already put together a very impressive reel of highlights.

Now she is beginning to add jaw-dropping moments at the international level to her resume.

Just 19 years of age, Swords not only led Team Canada with a 23-point effort in the bronze medal game of the 2025 FIBA Women's America Cup in Chile in Sunday, but also netted the game-winning basket with 1.4 seconds to play in double overtime as the Canucks edged Argentina 76-75.

Coming off a 65-53 loss to the United States in which she was held to just four points in 32 minutes of playing time, Swords was a constant threat versus Argentina, going 5/11 from beyond the arc and posting a team high +17 plus/minus rating.

Team Canada would be forced to regroup following their semi-final setback at the hands of the USA (who captured gold with a 92-84 win over Brasil) as Swords and company led 14-12 after the first quarter and 33-31 at the half.

A third quarter charge by the Americans still produced just a one-point advantage (51-50) for the perennial powerhouse, who then dominated the fourth quarter.

That game, however, had nothing on the Canada-Argentina contest in terms of sheer drama after the teams ended regulation time tied at 59-59, with the teams netting eight points apiece in the first OT session as Sami Hill (5 pts) and Syla Swords (3) accounted for the offense for Canada.

With less than 25 seconds to play in OT2, Hill sank a pair of free throws, putting Canada ahead 74-72, only to see Melissa Greter pull Argentina even on a layup, and making good on the "plus one" with two seconds showing on the clock.

With Delaney Gibb in-bounding for Canada (Gibb is also just 19 years old and an NCAA freshman), the native Albertan launched a perfect pass that hit Swords in stride, right below the basket as the graduate of R.L. Beattie Public School gave her team the win.
