2025-06-16

In this first year of OWFL (Ontario Women's Football League) play in Sudbury, local fans are still getting acquainted with the look and feel of girls tackle football action.

This past Saturday at the James Jerome Sports Complex, folks had a chance to witness it as played by some of the best female players in the province as the Peel Panthers swept a double header from the Sudbury Spartans.

Sudbury managed to get a few things going offensively in the opener, beaten 60-22 in the U16 affair while the elder Panthers (U19) bounced the northern girls 52-6.

Just a few names dominated the scoresheets as siblings Kiera Mighty (3 TDs; 4 two-point PATs) and Tiera Mighty (4 TDs; two-point PAT) handled the bulk of the U16 Peel attack, with Kelly Lu (TD) and Avery Angiers (two-point PAT) applying icing on the cake.

The homeside were led by running back Laila Lalonde, recording two majors and a pair of two-point conversions, while the opening TD for Sudbury went to Macey Kiviaho.

Braylynn Hawthorn-Harper paced the U19 Panthers attack, reaching the end zone on three occasions while Makaylah Lopez and Allena Biegay did so twice apiece.

Kaelise Daniel accounted for the final six-point score for the visitors, Neeya Hudson and Braylynn Hawthorn-Harper chipped in with two point converts with the Sudbury goose egg broken by Awosika Olaterere with a third quarter touchdown.

The Sudbury U16 (2-2) crew are right back at it against Peel next Saturday, this time on the road, while the U19 Spartans (also 2-2) also head south, facing the Etobicoke Eagles (3-2), also on Saturday.
