Eight games in two days is an awful lot of slo-pitch ball, even for a highly energetic group of high-school athletes.
Pretty sure the Horizon Aigles girls team felt it was all worthwhile.
The Aigles defeated the Bishop Carter Gators 2-1 in a best of three day two final series in order to claim the SDSSAA/NOSSA banner, capping off a stretch that included a handful of easy victories mixed with some very tough outings.
Horizon got on a roll early on day one, besting the Lo-Ellen Park Knights (15-5), Confederation Chargers (23-5) and St Charles College Cardinals (26-3) in succession.
The only team that was required to play a fourth game on day one, the Val Caron squad overcame obvious fatigue in outlasting the Espanola Spartans 23-22 in a game that went right down to the final inning.
With a night of rest behind them, the Aigles looked more than prepared for the semi-final rematch the next morning, grounding the Spartans 13-3 to earn a berth in the final versus Bishop Carter.
The matchup was a classic and it showed in each and every game as Horizon took the opener 10-7 but lost game two by a single run (9-8), forcing a third and deciding encounter.
With goaltender turned pitcher Desirée Charbonneau arching strikes from the mound and the offense receiving key contributions from the likes of Lexi Briscoe, Meghan Paquette, Kalia Pharand and Desirée Charbonneau, the champs pulled away in the end, closing out their triumphant stretch of ball with a 13-3 victory.
The defense, led by second baseman Sophie Savignac with several clutch stops, proved to be a difference maker as well.
"I couldn't be prouder watching these girls come together as a team, staying positive and showing the determination needed to win the city championship," stated head coach Chad Dubreuil.
The remainder of the Horizon Aigles roster is as follows: Madison Bodson, Reaghan Chamberland, Emily Mathias, Avery Nelson, Taryn Lavigne and Emma Tessier.
