The Sudbury U18 Jr Spartans are more than happy to play it any way you like.
Two weeks ago, the local OSFL (Ontario Summer Football League) crew took to the air in dismantling the Huronia Stallions 45-20 as Quin Mazzuchin hauled in no less than five touchdown receptions.
Last Saturday, the Jr Spartans established the ground game first and foremost, toppling the Quinte Skyhawks 21-8 in large part thanks to the efforts of running backs Braedan Beggs (15 carries - 94 yards) and Mason McLoughlin (8 carries - 51 yards) - and company.
"The O line (offensive line) really helped," said Beggs, who chipped in on the scoresheet by way of three converts as Dylan Nelson (opportunistically scooped up a Sudbury fumble on the two and ran it home), Koen Palmquist (18 yd pass from Ian MacDonald) and Quin Mazzuchin (16 yard pass from MacDonald) all reached the end zone for the homeside.
"When they're going, we're going," Beggs continued. "You can see it out on the field. And Mason comes in and we're a really, really good duo. They all make really good blocks."
All of that said, it would be unjust to downplay the contribution of the 19 year old former Confederation Charger now in his first year of Law & Justice studies at Laurentian University.
"It's just patience, letting my blocks develop," said Beggs. "Sometimes the defense lines up differently and there's going to be a different hole, so you've got to be ready to adjust."
The Jr Spartans took a 14-1 lead into the half as the locals did a nice job of containing standout Quinte running back Evan Benoit-Fray (15 carries - 72 yards), the young man who accounted for the only major for the Skyhawks.
"The pressure up front (defensively), our guys really brought it," said Beggs. "That running back is a very solid player and our defense had him in a lock. Our linebackers and secondary had great coverage. Everybody did their job and the result is a win."
As the winless Clarington Knights (0-3) come to town for a 2:30 p.m. matchup this Saturday at the James Jerome Sports Complex, Beggs is confident his team is fully capable of taking what the opponent gives them and making it work.
"We do what we've got to do to get the win," he said. "If that's keeping the score low and pounding the rock to kill the clock, that's what we do."
In the U16 encounter, not a whole lot of clock was killed when Sudbury speedster Levin Blouin would break through the first line of defense of the younger Quinte outfit.
Recording runs of 81, 27, 26 and 17 yards (two of which went for touchdowns), the Chelmsford native racked up 181 rushing yards on 17 carries as the U16 Jr Spartans bounced the visiting Skyhawks 37-13 in the early game.
Quarterback Evan DeMarchi also had himself a day (9/13 for 163 yards), with Cameron Quesnel (3 catches - 76 yards), Oliver Poupore (3 catches - 51 yards), Alex Campbell (one catch - 19 yards) and Levi Blouin (2 catches - 17 yards) all on the receiving end of his throws.
Rounding out the scoring for the U16 Jr Spartans were Noah Arsenault (27 yd TD run), Cameron Quesnel (5 converts) and Malakai Mayers, with a safety as the younger Sudbury squad opens the four game slate on Saturday, with kickoff against Clarington slatted for 11:30 a.m.
