Records continue to fall, this time at the NOSSA (Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics) level as the Lo-Ellen Park Knights are adding chapters to one of the most memorable seasons in school track and field history.
Annabelle Richardson (Novice Girls - 100m - 12.57*; 200m - 26.07) and Mélina Doiron (Senior Girls - 100m - 12.09) both established new individual standards and then were part of a pair of Lo-Ellen relay teams that also entered the record books (4 X 100m - novice - 51.99; 4 X 100m - senior - 50.49).
*Richardson's time of 12.57 in the 100m dash equaled the record that is now co-owned by Doiron
Joining the Knights above in their journey to excellence were the Lo-Ellen junior boys 4 X 100m relay team of Narayan Shukla, Ty Dubreuil, Janssen Fransen and Francis Mallory (45.01) as well as Marymount Academy ambulatory sprinter Sophia Carlson (100m dash - 15.10) and Chippewa Secondary (North Bay) junior thrower Raine Bradley (discus - 54.31m).
Rounding out the Lo-Ellen girls' relay teams mentioned above were the grade nine trio of Lia Gallo, Rya D'Amour and Ellie Sauve (joining Richardson) and the senior troika of Jaya MacDonald, Amanda Syncox and Milena Kulik (joining Doiron).
Capturing gold in no less than 35 separate events, the Knights also posted a new high in the aggregate team score, racking up 784 points in all, more than double the total of the second place team (St Joseph Scollard Hall Bears from North Bay).
In terms of other local athletes who might rank among the favourites entering OFSAA competition in Toronto from June 5th to the 7th, Blaire Rickard from Lasalle recorded a novice girls shot put toss of 11.67 metres, just 15 cm off the record held by three-time OFSAA medallist Lauren Fearn as well as reaching a distance that would have earned silver a year ago in London.
"I felt that I had a really good mindset going in," noted Rickard, first introduced to competitive athletics via coach Robert Esmie and the Air Blastoff group but now training regularly with Project Athletics in Toronto and throw coach Nathan Stern.
"The shot put is not only about technique," continued the high-school freshman who boasts a shot put personal best distance that exceeds 12 metres. "It's also about your mindset and how you feel going in."
"That and the explosive power that I had made for some of my better performances."
Where top eight performances by SDSSAA athletes can often be counted on just two hands, the 2025 contingent has the chance to go well beyond those numbers.
