The 2025 Ontario 55+ Summer Games are not your everyday, run of the mill sporting competition.

With events ranging from prediction walking to cribbage and on to carpet bowling, safe to say that this gathering of what officials hopes to be a field of 1200 or so will provide something of an eye-opener for the City of Greater Sudbury come the week of August 5th to August 7th.

A media launch hosted at Cambrian College a few weeks ago marked the kickoff to the Games countdown, a competition that owes its start to what was then referred to as Activefest in the year 1986.

"We are excited to be hosting people that are over 55 and active in their lifestyle," said mayor Paul Lefebvre. "If you want to be an active senior, Sudbury is a great place to live. This gives us a chance to showcase all of the facilities we have in Sudbury, what we have to offer for all four seasons."

These Games will signal the 20th anniversary of the biennial event, an undertaking that is offered in collaboration with the Ontario Senior Games Association (OSGA).

With more than 200 volunteers required to run the three days of festivities, opportunities remain to become involved, for all the same reasons that drew chair of the Games Organizing Committee (GOC) to her umpteenth event.

"First of all, I really like giving back to our community," said Barbara Nott, one-time president of Volunteer Sudbury. "It's such a wonderful experience to get involved in games like this."

"You leave these events feeling really good about our city and what you have done to help make it a success."

The Games themselves will feature Opening Ceremonies (Tuesday August 5th), a Middle Night Social Celebration (Wednesday August 6th) and medal ceremonies throughout.

"There will be a whole slew of social activities along with the sports," said mayor Lefebvre. "People can compete and then have fun, at the same time."
