Adding something a little different to their summer program menu, the City of Greater Sudbury Leisure Service Department is introducing a week-long sports camp for children between the ages of 10 and 12 from July 14th to the 18th.
"We wanted to do something for those kids who sometimes fall right into a gap in services (because of their ages)," said Renée-Anne Paquette, Recreation Coordinator with the City of Greater Sudbury - and a staunch supporter of all things physical literacy related.
"These camps allowed us to tailor the material and really focus in on specific subject matters," she added, with her department also offering a parallel program focused on arts and culture.
Where many a sport-specific camp has the elite athlete in mind, Paquette and company see this new initiative as far more of a grass roots endeavour.
"We would like to introduce sport to kids who may not have the resources to participate in some of these sports," she said. The bonus, from her end, is another chance to connect with those folks who are integral to the very development of amateur sport in Sudbury.
"This also provides us an opportunity to work with some of these groups who are active in the community," said Paquette, noting that while there still could be changes, the hopes are to cover a spectrum ranging from basketball and soccer through to the less mainstream activities such as disc golf and cricket.
"We see this as an opportunity for kids to try something new mixed in with some of the more typical sports," she said.
